The answer is without surgery
For thyroid nodules, a conclusion is issued according to the Bethesda system: category II - benign (observation), III-IV - indeterminate (repeat or surgery), V-VI - suspicion/cancer (surgery). In breast masses, cytology quickly distinguishes cysts and fibroadenomas from suspicious findings, complementing trephine biopsy histology. Fluid from the cavities is examined for tumor cells and inflammation. Punctures under ultrasound are performed in the clinic - the material reaches the cytologist immediately, without loss of quality.
When is it appointed?
- thyroid nodules - fine-needle biopsy material;
- formation of the mammary gland - punctate cyst or node;
- enlarged lymph nodes - puncture cytology;
- fluid from cavities (pleural, abdominal, articular);
- cysts of any localization - the nature of the contents.
Cells under a microscope
Cytological examination of punctate answers the main question - which cells are in the formation: benign, inflammatory or atypical. The material is obtained with a thin needle under ultrasound control (procedures are performed in the clinic), applied to glass, stained and studied. For thyroid nodules, the result is classified according to the Bethesda system, for the breast - according to categories with recommendations. The method is fast, low-traumatic and often finally closes the question of surgery.
