Frequent urination and nocturia
Frequent urination is a situation where a person goes to the toilet more often than usual, usually more than eight times a day, and nocturia is the need to wake up at night to urinate. The frequency depends on the amount of liquid drunk, coffee, alcohol and habits, so the number itself does not always mean illness. However, increased frequency may be a sign of a urinary tract infection, overactive bladder, prostate adenoma, diabetes, heart failure and other conditions. It is important to distinguish whether a lot of urine is produced or the urge is frequent and the portions are small. A urination diary and simple tests help to figure it out. Most causes are highly treatable.

Cystitis
Cystitis is inflammation of the mucous membrane of the bladder. It is manifested by pain when urinating, frequent and painful urges and a feeling that the bladder is never completely emptied. In women, cystitis occurs many times more often due to the short and wide urethra, located close to the intestines. In men, cystitis is almost always secondary - behind it lies another problem that needs to be found.

Interstitial cystitis
Interstitial cystitis, or painful bladder syndrome, is a chronic condition in which a person experiences pain in the bladder area and frequent urge, but urine tests remain sterile. This is one of the most underestimated urological problems: patients are treated for years with antibiotics for “chronic cystitis” that they do not have, wasting time and getting resistant flora instead of relief.

Leukoplakia of the bladder
Leukoplakia of the bladder is a change in the mucosa in which its normal urothelium is replaced by squamous epithelium, devoid of protective properties. It is this condition that is often associated with “cystitis that cannot be treated”: a woman receives courses of antibiotics for years, and cramps and frequent urges return again and again, because the cause is not bacteria, but an altered mucous membrane that is constantly irritated by urine.

Bladder diverticulum
A diverticulum of the bladder is a sac-like protrusion of its wall into which urine flows and from where it does not come out well. In adults, this is almost always the result of a long-term obstruction to the outflow of urine, most often prostate adenoma: the bladder has been working under overload for years, and the mucous membrane is squeezed between diverging muscle bundles. In stagnant urine, stones form inside the diverticulum, chronic inflammation develops, and sometimes a tumor.

Pyelonephritis
Pyelonephritis is a bacterial inflammation of the renal pelvis and kidney tissue. Unlike cystitis, this is already a lesion of the upper urinary tract: with high fever, chills and lower back pain. The form in which inflammation develops against the background of a kidney blocked by a stone is especially dangerous - here the clock is ticking, and antibiotics alone cannot do it: first you need to restore the flow of urine.

Kidney abscess and paranephritis
Kidney abscess and paranephritis are purulent complications in which inflammation ceases to be simply pyelonephritis and turns into a focus of pus inside the kidney or in the surrounding tissue. These are life-threatening conditions: they require not just antibiotics, but drainage of the abscess and often surgery. The key to timely help is a timely CT scan, because ultrasound at an early stage often does not show purulent melting.

Polycystic kidney disease
Polycystic kidney disease is a hereditary disease in which numerous cysts form and gradually grow in both kidneys, displacing normal tissue. This is fundamentally not the same as a simple kidney cyst found on an ultrasound: a simple cyst is harmless and does not affect the function of the organ, but polycystic disease leads to a decrease in kidney function for decades. The good news is that the course of the disease largely depends on blood pressure control and lifestyle.

Nephroptosis (prolapse of the kidney)
Nephroptosis is excessive mobility of the kidney, in which in a vertical position it moves downward much more than normal. A slight prolapse in itself is common and usually does not threaten anything. It becomes a problem when, due to displacement, the vessels and ureter become bent: pain in the lower back appears when standing, increased pressure and stagnation of urine. It is the presence of these consequences, and not the fact of prolapse itself, that determines the need for treatment.

Kidney development abnormalities
Anomalies of kidney development are congenital features of their number, location, shape or structure. Most of these findings are discovered by chance on an ultrasound and do not bother the person for the rest of his life. However, some anomalies disrupt the outflow of urine and are therefore accompanied by repeated pyelonephritis, stones and hydronephrosis. The physician's task is to distinguish a harmless anatomical feature from one that requires observation or surgery.
