Fractured fingers
A broken finger is a very common household and sports injury: the finger is pinched by a door, hit with a hammer, damaged while playing with a ball or falling. Each finger consists of two or three phalanges, and tendons pass through them, which pull fragments in different directions, so even a slight displacement can disrupt the function of the hand. The main signs are sharp pain, rapid swelling, bruising under the nail and the inability to fully bend or straighten the finger. It is impossible to distinguish a fracture from a severe bruise without a photograph. A missed injury often results in permanent deformity and limitation of movements, and restoring mobility later is much more difficult than healing the bone correctly right away.

Toe fracture
A broken toe is one of the most common household injuries: it is enough to hit the bed leg with your little toe, drop a heavy object on your foot, or twist your foot. The finger quickly swells, turns blue and hurts with every step. Many consider such an injury to be trivial and do not go to the doctor, but it is impossible to distinguish a fracture from a severe bruise without a picture, and an improperly fused finger then becomes deformed, makes it difficult to wear shoes and causes pain when walking. The thumb requires special attention: it bears the main load during push-off, and its fracture is treated more strictly. In most cases, simple fixation is sufficient, but the decision is made by the traumatologist.

Humerus fracture
The humerus connects the shoulder and elbow joints and breaks differently depending on age and the mechanism of injury. In older people, especially women with osteoporosis, the upper end, the surgical neck of the shoulder, is most often affected: a fall from your own height onto an outstretched arm is enough. In young people, midshaft fractures are usually associated with high energy: road traffic accidents, sports injuries, direct blows. The peculiarity of the humerus is that the radial nerve runs along its posterior surface, and if it is fractured, it can be damaged - then the hand stops extending. Therefore, testing of movement and sensation in the hand is mandatory for any such fracture.

Metatarsal fracture
The metatarsals are the five long bones in the midfoot that form the arch and bear the load of each step. Their fractures occur when a heavy object falls on the foot, a twisted leg, a sports injury, and also gradually, from repeated loads - then they speak of a stress or march fracture. A special place is occupied by a fracture of the base of the fifth metatarsal bone: it occurs when the foot is sharply turned inward and is often disguised as a sprain. The main signs are pain when standing, swelling of the dorsum of the foot and bruising. Most of these fractures heal in a cast or rigid brace, but some require surgery.

Calcaneal fracture
The heel bone is the largest bone in the foot and bears the weight of the body with every step. It breaks most often when falling or jumping from a height: the force of the impact is transmitted through the talus and splits the heel from the inside. Most of these fractures are intra-articular, that is, they affect the subtalar joint, which determines the ability of the foot to adapt to uneven surfaces. Hence the main difficulty: even with good fusion of the bone, pain and limitation of movements may remain. An important feature is that when falling from a height, both heels and also the spine are often affected simultaneously, so not only the foot is examined.

Fractured ribs
A rib fracture is one of the most common chest injuries. It occurs during a fall, blow, car accident, and in older people with osteoporosis and severe coughing. The broken rib itself heals on its own within a few weeks, and a cast is not applied to the chest. The danger is not the bone, but what is nearby: the lung, pleura, blood vessels, liver and spleen. In addition, due to severe pain, a person begins to breathe shallowly and suppress coughing, and this is a direct path to pneumonia. Therefore, the main goal of treatment is to relieve pain so that you can breathe deeply.

Femoral neck fracture
A hip fracture is a serious injury that most often occurs in older people as a result of a normal fall from their own height. The reason for this fragility is osteoporosis, in which the bone loses density long before the fracture and does not bother you at all. The femoral neck has poor blood supply, so without surgery it hardly heals, and forced immobility quickly leads to pneumonia, bedsores and thrombosis. It is these complications, and not the bone itself, that determine the prognosis. Therefore, the modern approach is to operate as early as possible and get the patient back on his feet in the coming days.

Damage to the lateral ligaments of the knee joint
The lateral, or collateral, ligaments run along the inner and outer surfaces of the knee and prevent the tibia from deviating to the sides. The internal ligament is damaged much more often: a blow to the outside of the knee or twisting of the leg when the shin goes out is enough. This is a typical injury for football players, skiers and wrestlers, but it also occurs in everyday life when falling. The good news is that the internal ligament has a good blood supply and in most cases heals without surgery. Another thing is important: with a severe injury, the cruciate ligaments and menisci can be damaged at the same time, and damage to the external ligament is often accompanied by injury to the peroneal nerve.

Subluxation of the radial head in children (“nanny's elbow”)
Subluxation of the radial head, called nursemaid's elbow, is the most common elbow injury in children one to five years of age. It occurs when a child is sharply pulled by the straightened arm: lifted by the hand, kept from falling, put on a jacket, or swung by the arms. The annular ligament, which holds the head of the radial bone, is still flexible in babies, and when jerking, it slips and is pinched in the joint. The child immediately stops using his arm, holds it along his body and cries when trying to bend his elbow. There is usually no swelling or bruising. The doctor realigns the joint in a matter of seconds, and mobility returns almost immediately.

Post-traumatic headache
Post-traumatic headache is pain that begins within a week of a head or neck injury and can persist for weeks or months. It occurs even after a minor injury without loss of consciousness and without changes in the images, so a normal tomogram does not mean that the complaints are far-fetched. The nature of the pain most often resembles a tension headache or migraine, and is often combined with dizziness, irritability, sleep disturbance, and difficulty concentrating. Most people get better within a few weeks. The main conditions for a good outcome are a gradual, rather than sudden, return to exercise, and a refusal to take daily uncontrolled painkillers.
