Bags and swelling under the eyes
Bags under the eyes are swelling of the lower eyelids that can be transient or permanent. The skin of the eyelids is the thinnest in the body, and underneath there are fatty packets held in place by a thin septum. If fluid is retained in the tissues, swelling appears in the morning, which subsides by mid-day: this happens after salty food, alcohol, tears, lack of sleep or sleeping face down in the pillow. If the septum weakens with age, the fat protrudes forward and persistent fat hernias are formed - they do not depend on the regime and do not go away in the evening. There is a separate group of reasons that require examination: kidney disease, thyroid disease, heart disease, allergies and inflammation of the eyelids.

Floaters before the eyes (vitreous destruction)
Floaters before the eyes are floating dots, threads, cobwebs or rings that move following the movement of the gaze and are better visible against a light background: the sky, a white wall, a screen. They are most often caused by vitreous destruction, an age-related thinning of the clear gel that fills the eye, causing its fibers to clump together and cast shadows on the retina. After 50 years and in people with myopia, posterior vitreous detachment often occurs, when it moves away from the retina, and there are more floaters. In most cases, this is safe, and over time the floaters become less noticeable. However, the sudden appearance of many floaters, flashes of light or shadows in the field of view may indicate a retinal tear or detachment, and examination is necessary on the same day.

Drooping eyelid skin (dermatochalasis)
Dermatochalasis is an excess of stretched skin of the upper, less often lower, eyelids. With age, the skin loses its elasticity, the orbicularis muscle weakens, and the septum that holds the fatty tissue stretches, and the fold begins to hang over the eyelash edge. Most often this is a cosmetic problem: the look looks tired, and the makeup doesn’t stay on well. But with a pronounced excess, the skin covers the upper part of the field of view, the person reflexively raises his eyebrows and in the evening feels heaviness and a headache in the forehead. Then we are no longer talking about aesthetics, but about a functional disorder that is eliminated surgically.

Optic neuritis
Optic neuritis is an inflammation of the nerve that transmits images from the eye to the brain. Vision in one eye decreases over several hours or days: fog appears, a spot appears in the center of the field of vision, colors become dull and “faded.” Pain when moving the eye is very common and often precedes vision deterioration. Young people, mostly women, are more often affected. The condition itself in many cases results in good vision restoration, but it requires urgent examination: neuritis is the first manifestation of multiple sclerosis and some other diseases of the nervous system, which are important to identify early.

Nystagmus
Nystagmus is involuntary rhythmic vibrations of the eyeballs. They can be horizontal, vertical or rotational, constant or occurring only when looking to the side. Nystagmus itself is not a disease, but a sign that the gaze-holding system is disrupted: visual, vestibular, or their connections in the brain stem and cerebellum. In children, it is often congenital and is combined with eye diseases, due to which the brain does not receive a clear image. In adults, sudden onset nystagmus almost always indicates a neurological or vestibular disorder and requires examination.

Retinal vein occlusion (thrombosis)
Retinal vein occlusion is a blockage of the vessel through which blood flows from the retina. The outflow stops, the pressure in the capillaries increases sharply, and plasma with blood enters the tissue: hemorrhages and swelling of the macula occur. Vision in one eye decreases suddenly, usually within a few hours, without pain or redness. This is why the condition is often compared to an eye stroke. The main culprits are arterial hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus and glaucoma: a thickened artery compresses the adjacent vein in the common lining. The earlier treatment is started, the greater the chance of returning central vision.

Ophthalmoherpes (herpes of the eye)
Ophthalmoherpes is damage to the eye by the herpes simplex virus, which, after the first encounter with the body, remains forever in the nerve ganglia and is activated from time to time. Most often, the cornea suffers: a characteristic tree-like ulcer appears on it, the eye turns red, watery, hurts and is afraid of light. The danger is that with repeated exacerbations, the cornea becomes cloudy and scars remain on it, and this permanently reduces vision. A separate problem is self-medication with hormonal drops: for herpetic ulcers, they sharply worsen the course of the disease. Treatment is prescribed only by an ophthalmologist after examination.

Veil and fog before the eyes
A veil before the eyes is a feeling that you are looking through foggy glass, film or haze. This is not a diagnosis, but a symptom that can come from any part of the visual system: from the tear film and cornea to the retina, optic nerve and cerebral cortex. Short-term fogging after long periods of screen time or dry eyes is harmless and goes away after blinking and resting. But a sudden, persistent clouding, especially on one eye, with flares, side curtains, pain, or headaches, may be a sign of retinal detachment, an acute attack of glaucoma, a blocked retinal vessel, or a stroke. In these cases, the clock counts.

Peripheral retinal dystrophy
Peripheral retinal dystrophy - areas of thinning and changes in the retina at its edges, away from the center of vision. Such areas usually do not cause any symptoms and are detected only when examining the fundus with a dilated pupil. More often, dystrophies are detected in people with myopia, since their eyes are elongated and the retina is stretched, but they also occur with normal vision. Dystrophy itself does not reduce vision. Its danger is that gaps can form in thin places, through which fluid penetrates under the retina and causes its detachment - a condition that threatens vision loss. For most people, observation is enough, and at high risk, preventive laser coagulation is performed, which strengthens the retina.

Pinguecula
A pinguecula is a small yellowish-white thickening of the conjunctiva that appears on the white of the eye next to the iris, usually on the side of the nose. This is not a tumor or a wen, but the result of many years of exposure to ultraviolet radiation, wind, dust and dry air: the conjunctival tissue is rebuilt, and modified fibers are deposited in it. The pinguecula does not grow into the cornea and usually does not affect vision, so in most cases it is simply observed. Dryness, a gritty feeling and periodic inflammation are causes of concern. The problem is noticeable in hot, sunny climates where eye protection is especially important.
