Radial neuropathy (hand drop)
Radial nerve neuropathy is a lesion of the nerve that is responsible for the extension of the hand and fingers and for the sensitivity of the dorsum of the forearm and hand. The most striking sign is a drooping hand: the arm is extended forward, but the hand hangs limply and does not straighten. Most often, the nerve is compressed in the middle third of the shoulder, where it lies directly on the bone in a narrow groove. Typical situations are sleeping in an uncomfortable position, when the arm is pinched by your own head or the edge of the back of the sofa, prolonged compression with a tourniquet or crutch, or a fracture of the humerus. The prognosis for compression is usually good, but recovery requires time and therapeutic exercises.

Peroneal nerve neuropathy
Peroneal nerve neuropathy is damage to the nerve that elevates the foot and toes and is responsible for sensation in the outer surface of the leg and dorsum of the foot. The nerve passes very superficially in the place where it bends around the head of the fibula at the outer side of the knee, and there it is easy to compress it: by prolonged sitting cross-legged, a tight plaster cast, a boot, or position on the operating table. The main symptom is foot drop: a person cannot lift his toe, clings to the floor with it and raises his knee high when walking. When the cause of the compression is eliminated, the function is often restored, but the longer the damage exists, the slower the recovery.

Neurofibromatosis
Neurofibromatosis is a group of hereditary diseases in which the functioning of genes that inhibit the growth of nerve tissue cells is disrupted. Because of this, benign tumors form along the nerves, and characteristic spots appear on the skin. The most common variant is neurofibromatosis type 1, which is usually recognized in childhood by light brown café-au-lait spots and freckle-like rashes in the armpits and inguinal folds. Neurofibromatosis type 2 is less common and manifests primarily as bilateral tumors of the auditory nerves with hearing loss. The disease cannot be cured, but regular monitoring allows you to identify and solve emerging problems in a timely manner.

Nervous tics and Tourette's syndrome
Tics are sudden, rapid, repetitive movements or sounds that a person makes involuntarily: blinking, shoulder twitching, grimacing, coughing, grunting. Before a tic, there is often an unpleasant sensation that goes away after movement, and the tic can be controlled for a short time. Tics are very common in school-age children, especially boys, and in most cases go away on their own within a few months. If motor and at least one vocal tic persist for more than a year, they speak of Tourette's syndrome. Tics are not associated with poor parenting and are not a sign of declining intelligence. They intensify with excitement and fatigue. Treatment is needed if tics interfere with learning, socializing, or cause pain.

Cervical spine instability
Cervical instability is a condition in which the vertebrae, when bending and straightening, move relative to each other more than normal, because the ligaments, intervertebral disc and muscles no longer hold them securely. It can be a consequence of trauma, degenerative changes in the disc, previous surgeries, congenital features and systemic connective tissue diseases. Typical complaints are pain and fatigue in the neck, crunching, a feeling of “unstable” head, headaches in the back of the head, dizziness when turning. The diagnosis is made not by complaints alone, but by functional x-rays in flexion and extension. Most patients are treated without surgery, but it is important to notice early signs of compression of the nerve structures.

Nystagmus
Nystagmus is involuntary rhythmic vibrations of the eyeballs. They can be horizontal, vertical or rotational, constant or occurring only when looking to the side. Nystagmus itself is not a disease, but a sign that the gaze-holding system is disrupted: visual, vestibular, or their connections in the brain stem and cerebellum. In children, it is often congenital and is combined with eye diseases, due to which the brain does not receive a clear image. In adults, sudden onset nystagmus almost always indicates a neurological or vestibular disorder and requires examination.

Bedwetting in adults
Bedwetting in an adult is involuntary urination during sleep, which has persisted since childhood or has reappeared. This is not a sign of laziness or weak will and not something that needs to be hidden: there is almost always a specific medical reason behind it. Most often, these are an overactive bladder, obstruction of urine flow, disruption of the hormone that reduces urine production at night, as well as sleep apnea, diabetes, urinary tract infections and neurological diseases. Alcohol, sleeping pills and diuretics play a separate role. Since there are many reasons, you need to talk to your doctor: in most cases, the condition is treatable.

Fainting (syncope)
Fainting, or syncope, is a brief loss of consciousness due to a sudden decrease in blood flow to the brain. The person turns pale, falls and comes to his senses on his own within seconds or a couple of minutes, usually without consequences. The most common is reflex (vasovagal) fainting - from stuffiness, long standing, the sight of blood, pain or fear; it is not dangerous in itself, but can cause injury if it falls. Less commonly, the cause is heart rhythm disturbances, valve defects, or a sharp drop in blood pressure when standing up, and such fainting requires examination. The main task of the doctor is to distinguish a harmless reflex episode from cardiogenic syncope and from an epileptic seizure. Any first fainting spell in an adult should be discussed with a doctor.

Numbness of the arms and legs (paresthesia)
Paresthesia is an unpleasant sensation of numbness, tingling, burning or “crawling” in the arms and legs without an external stimulus. Short-term numbness when you “rest” your arm or sit cross-legged for a long time is safe and goes away within minutes after changing your position. Persistent or recurrent paresthesia is a symptom indicating damage to the nerves, spinal cord, or brain. The most common causes are tunnel syndromes, such as compression of the median nerve at the wrist, cervical or lumbar radiculopathy, diabetes mellitus, vitamin B12 deficiency, and alcohol abuse. Sudden numbness of half the body, face or arm with weakness may be a sign of a stroke and should be called immediately 103. In other cases, it is important to find the cause, as many of them are well treated.

Shingles (herpes zoster)
Shingles, or herpes zoster, is a disease caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus. After chickenpox, usually suffered in childhood, the virus remains in the nerve ganglia for life and can “wake up” if the immune system is weakened. It travels along the nerve to the skin, causing severe burning pain and a blistering rash in a stripe on one side of the body, usually on the chest, abdomen or face. It mainly affects people over 50 years of age and those with weakened immune systems. The most common complications are long-term postherpetic neuralgia and eye damage. Antiviral treatment is most effective if started within 72 hours of the rash appearing. For older people, there is vaccination.
