Post-traumatic headache
Post-traumatic headache is pain that begins within a week of a head or neck injury and can persist for weeks or months. It occurs even after a minor injury without loss of consciousness and without changes in the images, so a normal tomogram does not mean that the complaints are far-fetched. The nature of the pain most often resembles a tension headache or migraine, and is often combined with dizziness, irritability, sleep disturbance, and difficulty concentrating. Most people get better within a few weeks. The main conditions for a good outcome are a gradual, rather than sudden, return to exercise, and a refusal to take daily uncontrolled painkillers.

Loss of smell (anosmia)
Anosmia is a complete loss of smell, hyposmia is a decrease in smell. Sometimes odors are distorted or a person perceives non-existent, often unpleasant odors. The sense of smell is provided by receptors in the upper part of the nasal cavity, from which the signal travels along the olfactory nerves to the brain, and a disorder can occur at any level. The most common causes are viral infections, chronic rhinosinusitis with polyps and allergic rhinitis, less often head trauma, age-related changes and neurological diseases. Loss of the sense of smell reduces the enjoyment of food, affects mood and is dangerous because a person will not be able to smell gas, smoke or spoiled food. In many cases, the sense of smell is restored, especially with timely treatment of the cause and olfactory training.

Intervertebral disc protrusion
Intervertebral disc protrusion is a protrusion of the disc beyond the vertebral bodies without rupture of its outer fibrous ring. This is one of the stages of disc degeneration that may precede a herniation. The lumbar and cervical regions are most often affected. Protrusions are very often found on MRI in adults without any complaints, and such a finding in itself is not a diagnosis requiring treatment. Pain occurs if the protrusion irritates the nerve root or is combined with overload of the muscles and joints. Then you are worried about pain in the lower back or neck, shooting in the leg or arm, and numbness. It is important to evaluate not only the image, but also the symptoms. In the vast majority of cases, protrusion is treated conservatively: movement, exercises and pain relief as prescribed by the doctor.

Irritability and angry outbursts
Irritability is an increased readiness to react with anger or harshness to ordinary, previously unaffected little things. It is not a disease in itself, but a signal: the body or psyche is working to the limit. Most often, it is caused by lack of sleep, chronic fatigue, pain, anxiety or low mood, less often - hormonal changes, iron deficiency, side effects of medications and the consequences of quitting alcohol or nicotine. If outbursts of anger are repeated, destroy relationships, or are replaced by feelings of guilt and emptiness, you need to sort it out not through willpower, but together with a specialist. The good news is that in most cases the cause is treatable and the condition improves noticeably within a few weeks.

Back muscle strain
A back strain is damage to muscle fibers and ligaments, most often in the lower back, due to sudden or unusual force. Typical situation: lifting weights with a round back, jerking while turning, falling or working in a bent position for a long time. In response to micro-tears, a protective muscle spasm occurs, which gives the main pain and the “stuck” feeling. This is one of the most common causes of acute back pain, and in the vast majority of cases it is not associated with a herniated disc or fracture. The pain is frightening in its severity, but with the right behavior it goes away in a few days, and full recovery takes a couple of weeks.

Sudden deterioration of vision
A sharp deterioration in vision is a decrease in acuity or a narrowing of the field of vision that occurs suddenly: over minutes, hours or several days. It can affect one or both eyes and may appear as a blur, dark spot, blinders, distorted lines, or complete loss of vision. This symptom is often accompanied by emergency conditions: blockage of the retinal artery, retinal detachment, acute attack of glaucoma, inflammation of the optic nerve or stroke. In many of these cases, the outcome of treatment depends on the clock, so waiting for vision to recover on its own is dangerous. The main conclusion: sudden loss of vision is a reason to see an ophthalmologist on the same day, and if combined with neurological symptoms, call an ambulance at 103.

Photophobia
Photophobia, or photophobia, is an increased painful sensitivity to light, in which ordinary lighting causes pain, lacrimation and the desire to close your eyes. This is not a separate disease, but a symptom that occurs when the trigeminal nerve is irritated, inflammation of the anterior segment of the eye, or increased excitability of the visual pathways of the brain. The most common causes are related to the eyes: dryness, corneal erosion, foreign body, conjunctivitis, inflammation of the iris. Neurological ones are no less important: migraine, concussion, and in combination with headache, fever and tension in the neck muscles - meningitis, which requires emergency help. An examination by an ophthalmologist, and, if necessary, a neurologist, helps to understand.

Empty sella syndrome
The sella turcica is a bony depression at the base of the skull in which the pituitary gland lies. They speak of “empty” sella turcica syndrome when the meninges with cerebrospinal fluid protrude into this depression, and the pituitary gland itself is pressed and spread out along the bottom. In the photo, the saddle appears to be filled with fluid, hence the name. It is important to understand: “empty” does not mean the absence of the pituitary gland. In most cases, this is an incidental finding on an MRI done for another reason, and there are no hormonal abnormalities. Treatment is required only when complaints appear or a decrease in pituitary function is confirmed, so the main step after such a conclusion is examination by an endocrinologist.

Restless legs syndrome
Restless legs syndrome is a neurological disorder in which at rest, especially in the evening and at night, unpleasant sensations appear in the legs and an irresistible urge to move them. People describe them as “twisting”, “whining”, “pulling”, “ant crawling”. Movement brings relief, but as soon as you lie down, the sensations return, making it difficult to fall asleep. It is based on disturbances in the metabolism of dopamine and iron in the brain. The syndrome can be hereditary, and also occurs with iron deficiency, pregnancy, chronic kidney disease, nerve damage and against the background of certain medications. It is not life-threatening, but chronic sleep deprivation reduces quality of life. Testing ferritin and changing habits often significantly improves symptoms.

Guillain-Barré syndrome
Guillain-Barré syndrome is an acute disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks its own peripheral nerves. It usually begins one to three weeks after an intestinal or respiratory infection: numbness and weakness appear in the feet, which within a few days rise to the legs, thighs, torso and arms. Tendon reflexes disappear, gait is disrupted. In severe cases, the muscles of breathing and swallowing are affected, and the person requires intensive care. This is an emergency condition: weakness develops quickly, but with timely treatment, most patients recover well. Delay is dangerous, so if you experience such symptoms, you should immediately seek help.
