Brain tumor
A brain tumor is the growth of abnormal cells in the brain tissue or its membranes. Primary tumors arise in the brain itself, the meninges, the pituitary gland, or the cranial nerves; secondary - metastases of cancer of other organs; in adults they are more common. Tumors can be benign, such as most meningiomas, or malignant, such as glioblastoma. However, even a benign tumor can be dangerous due to the pressure on vital structures in the limited space of the skull. Symptoms depend on the location and rate of growth: increasing headache, epileptic seizures, weakness, speech and vision disorders, personality changes. The main diagnostic method is MRI with contrast, and the type of tumor is determined by histological examination. Treatment is selected by a team of neurosurgeon, oncologist and radiotherapist.

Paresis and paralysis of the larynx
Paresis of the larynx is a limitation of the mobility of the vocal fold, paralysis is its complete immobility. The cause most often lies not in the larynx itself, but in damage to the nerve that controls it. The recurrent laryngeal nerve travels a long way: it descends into the chest and returns to the larynx, bending around large vessels, so it is vulnerable during operations on the thyroid gland, tumors of the lung and mediastinum, diseases of the aorta and heart. The fixed fold does not close with the healthy one, and the voice becomes weak, breathy, and choking appears when drinking. Bilateral paralysis is dangerous due to breathing problems.

Meralgia paresthetica (Roth's disease)
Meralgia paresthetica, or Roth's disease, is compression of the external cutaneous nerve of the thigh where it passes under the inguinal ligament. This nerve is responsible only for sensitivity, so there is a burning sensation, tingling, numbness and increased sensitivity of the skin on the anterior outer surface of the thigh, but the strength in the leg is completely preserved and the gait does not change. The complaints are aggravated by standing and walking, and are relieved by sitting with the hip slightly flexed. The most common culprits are tight clothing, a tight belt, excess weight, pregnancy and prolonged standing. The condition is not dangerous, but it can be noticeably disturbing, and in most cases it can be eliminated with simple measures.

Veil and fog before the eyes
A veil before the eyes is a feeling that you are looking through foggy glass, film or haze. This is not a diagnosis, but a symptom that can come from any part of the visual system: from the tear film and cornea to the retina, optic nerve and cerebral cortex. Short-term fogging after long periods of screen time or dry eyes is harmless and goes away after blinking and resting. But a sudden, persistent clouding, especially on one eye, with flares, side curtains, pain, or headaches, may be a sign of retinal detachment, an acute attack of glaucoma, a blocked retinal vessel, or a stroke. In these cases, the clock counts.

Plexitis (damage to the brachial plexus)
The brachial plexus is a dense bundle of nerves that emerges from the cervical spinal cord and controls the entire arm, from the shoulder to the fingertips. Plexitis, or plexopathy, is its damage, most often inflammatory, traumatic or from compression. A typical picture: sudden severe pain in the shoulder and upper arm, which lasts for several days or weeks, and when it subsides, weakness and thinning of the arm muscles are detected. There are many reasons - from birth and sports trauma to hypothermia, infection, tumor and the consequences of radiation therapy. The prognosis depends on the cause and extent of the damage, so it is important to find out as early as possible which part of the plexus is damaged.

Humeroscapular periarthritis
Humeral periarthritis is a collective name for painful conditions of the soft tissues around the shoulder joint. Most often, this diagnosis hides damage to the rotator cuff tendons and adhesive capsulitis, in which the joint capsule becomes inflamed, thickens and tightens. A person first notices nighttime shoulder pain, then finds that he cannot put his arm behind his back, comb his hair or take off his shirt. The joint itself is not destroyed: the tendons, bursae and capsule are affected. The condition lasts for months, but with proper rehabilitation, hand mobility is restored in most cases.

Transverse myelitis
Transverse myelitis is an acute inflammation of the spinal cord, affecting its diameter at one or more levels. The pathways are damaged and signals stop passing below the site of inflammation. Typically, weakness in the legs and sometimes in the arms, numbness with a clear border on the torso, back pain, as well as problems with urination and defecation develop over hours or days. The cause may be autoimmune processes, including the onset of multiple sclerosis or neuromyelitis optica spectrum diseases, past infections, and systemic diseases. This is an emergency condition: the earlier treatment is started, the higher the chance of recovery, so urgent hospitalization is required.

Consequences of stroke and rehabilitation
The consequences of a stroke are persistent disorders that remain after an acute cerebrovascular accident: weakness in the arm and leg, impaired speech and swallowing, changes in sensitivity, vision, memory and mood. Their set depends on which area of the brain was damaged and how quickly help was provided. Some functions are restored due to the fact that neighboring areas of the brain take over the work, and this is what rehabilitation is built on. The most noticeable improvements occur in the first 3-6 months, but exercises make sense even later. The second mandatory task after a stroke is to prevent another: control blood pressure, heart rate, cholesterol and blood sugar.

Postherpetic neuralgia
Postherpetic neuralgia is pain that persists in the area of the rash for more than three months after shingles. The varicella-zoster virus, which has lain dormant in the nerve ganglia for many years, damages the nerve itself when it awakens, and it continues to send pain signals to the brain even after the skin has healed. The pain is burning, shooting or similar to an electric shock, often combined with the fact that the light touch of clothing becomes unbearable. The risk increases sharply after age 50 and with severe rashes. This is not a complication of the skin, but damage to the nerve, so conventional painkillers help little and other groups of drugs are needed.

Constant sleepiness
Constant drowsiness is a condition in which a person tends to fall asleep during the day, despite a seemingly sufficient duration of night rest. This is not the same as fatigue: with drowsiness, a person actually falls asleep in a quiet environment, in transport, at a meeting, and sometimes while driving, which makes the problem dangerous. Most often, the reason is the quantity or quality of sleep: chronic lack of sleep, night awakenings, obstructive apnea syndrome with snoring and breathing pauses. Another large group of causes are physical: iron deficiency, decreased thyroid function, diabetes, depression, side effects of medications. A targeted examination helps to figure it out.
