How to choose glasses correctly

Automatic refractometer data is just a starting point. Next, the doctor selects lenses in a trial frame, checking not only the sharpness, but also the comfort: glasses that give a “one”, but cause a headache, are chosen incorrectly. The interpupillary distance must be measured - if there is an error in this parameter, the lenses work with a displacement of the optical center and cause fatigue. For reading after 40 years and with astigmatism, the selection is carried out separately, and the prescription takes into account the purpose of glasses: for distance, for near or progressive.

What is included in a full ophthalmological examination?

  • visometry - determination of visual acuity with and without correction
  • tonometry - measurement of intraocular pressure
  • biomicroscopy - examination of the cornea, iris and lens at the slit lamp
  • ophthalmoscopy - examination of the retina, optic nerve head and fundus vessels

Why is the fundus checked not only by an ophthalmologist?

The fundus of the eye is the only place in the body where the vessels are directly visible, without incisions or devices. Therefore, an examination by an ophthalmologist is prescribed for hypertension, diabetes, kidney disease and during pregnancy: changes in the vessels of the retina show what is happening to the vessels of the whole body.

In case of diabetes, such an examination is required at least once a year: diabetic retinopathy is asymptomatic for a long time, and at a late stage, vision is lost irreversibly.

How often to get your eyes checked

For adults without complaints - once every 1-2 years, after 40 years annually (the risk of glaucoma increases with age). For children - before school and then annually, since myopia most often develops and progresses during school years.

Each option is a separate page with a description, indications and the clinic price.

Frequently asked questions

How is an ophthalmologist different from an ophthalmologist?+
This is the same specialty. “Oculist” is an outdated name, “ophthalmologist” is a modern one.
Is it necessary to dilate the pupil?+
Not always, but without dilation, the doctor sees only the central part of the retina. For complaints of flashes, “spots”, myopia and diabetes, an examination with a wide pupil is necessary.
Can I come wearing contact lenses?+
Yes, but it is advisable to remove contact lenses 1-2 hours before the appointment so that the cornea takes its natural shape - otherwise the measurements will be inaccurate.
At what age do children have their eyesight checked?+
The first examination is carried out in the first year of life, then at 3 years and before school. In case of prematurity and hereditary pathology - according to an individual schedule.
