What is most often found

The most common cause of elbow pain is epicondylitis, an inflammatory and degenerative lesion of the tendons at their insertion (“tennis elbow” and “golfer’s elbow”). MRI shows the degree of changes in the tendon and the presence of a partial rupture, which determines the tactics. The study also reveals damage to the collateral ligaments, loose intra-articular bodies, bursitis and compression of the ulnar nerve in the cubital canal.

Why do you need an MRI for a joint injury?

X-rays and computed tomography clearly show the bone, but the ligaments, menisci, cartilage and tendons are practically invisible on them. Meanwhile, it is these structures that are damaged in a typical sports or everyday joint injury.

MRI is the only test that can show a torn meniscus, cruciate ligament injury, bone marrow edema, fluid accumulation, and cartilage damage without surgery.

What does joint examination reveal?

  • tears and degenerative changes of the menisci
  • partial and complete ruptures of ligaments and tendons
  • damage to articular cartilage and signs of arthrosis
  • accumulation of fluid in the joint cavity and synovitis
  • bone marrow edema and hidden fractures not visible on x-ray
  • cysts, tumors and inflammatory changes in periarticular tissues

What to do with the pictures

The radiologist's report describes the changes found, but the decision on treatment is made by an orthopedic traumatologist, comparing the MRI picture with complaints and examination results. The same changes in different patients may require both conservative tactics and arthroscopy.

Frequently asked questions

Is it possible to do an MRI if there are metal structures?+
Modern titanium plates, screws and endoprostheses are compatible with MRI, but be sure to inform your doctor about them: artifacts are possible near the metal, and the study protocol is adjusted.
MRI or ultrasound of the joint - which is better?+
Ultrasound is more accessible and shows superficial tendons and fluid well. MRI provides a complete picture of all joint structures, including menisci, cartilage and bone, and serves as the main method before surgery.
Is contrast needed when examining joints?+
In most cases no. Contrast is used for suspected tumors, inflammation, and in some cases after surgery.
How long should I wait for the conclusion?+
As a rule, the conclusion and images are issued on the day of the examination.
