Cephalohematoma
Cephalohematoma is an accumulation of blood between the skull bone and the periosteum covering it, which occurs in a newborn during childbirth. The reason is that when passing through the birth canal, the scalp is displaced relative to the bone, and the small vessels of the periosteum are torn. It looks like a soft elastic swelling on one of the bones of the skull, usually the parietal one, which does not go beyond the boundaries of this bone and does not change the color of the skin. Unlike a birth tumor, a cephalohematoma often becomes more noticeable not immediately, but in the first days of life. Most of these formations resolve on their own within a few weeks and do not affect the development of the child.

Conjunctivitis of newborns
Neonatal conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the eye in the first month of life. It manifests itself as redness, swelling of the eyelids, lacrimation and discharge, due to which the eyelids stick together after sleep. The reasons can be different: an infection acquired during the passage of the birth canal, bacteria that entered later, irritation with eye drops immediately after childbirth, and very often - not inflammation at all, but obstruction of the nasolacrimal canal, when the tear stagnates and an infection occurs. It is important to distinguish between these conditions because they have different treatments. The eyes of a newborn require caution: any drops and ointments are prescribed only by a doctor; self-medication is unacceptable here.

Premature baby
A child born before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy is considered premature. These babies are born with immature lungs, thermoregulatory systems, digestion and nervous systems, so in the first weeks they need help: maintaining warmth, breathing, nutrition and protection from infections. The shorter the term and weight at birth, the longer and more difficult the nursing. Modern neonatology makes it possible to successfully care for children born long before their due date, and most of them catch up with their peers in the first years of life. It is important for parents to understand two things: development is assessed by corrected age, and after discharge the child needs regular monitoring by several specialists.

Omphalitis (inflammation of the navel)
Omphalitis is an inflammation of the umbilical wound and the skin around it in a newborn. The umbilical cord usually falls off in the first two weeks of life, and until complete healing the wound remains an open gate for bacteria. If it gets infected, the skin around the navel turns red, swells, cloudy or purulent discharge appears, and an unpleasant odor appears. In newborns, the protective mechanisms are still immature, so inflammation can quickly spread to the anterior abdominal wall, umbilical vessels and blood. This is why omphalitis cannot be treated at home on the advice of friends: redness around the baby’s navel is a reason to show the child to the doctor on the same day.

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)
The ductus arteriosus is a vessel that in the prenatal period connects the pulmonary artery and the aorta, allowing blood to bypass the unexpanded lungs. After the first breaths, it should close: in full-term babies, usually within the first two days, completely - by 2–4 weeks. If the duct remains open, blood from the aorta is constantly dumped into the pulmonary artery, overloading the lungs and left side of the heart. It most often occurs in premature infants. A small duct may not give any complaints for years, but a large one causes shortness of breath, poor weight gain and requires closure.

Perinatal CNS damage
Perinatal damage to the central nervous system is damage to the baby's brain that occurs between the 22nd week of pregnancy and the first week after birth. The most common cause is a lack of oxygen and impaired blood flow during pregnancy or childbirth, less often it is infections, hemorrhages, severe jaundice, metabolic disorders and birth trauma. The severity varies greatly: from mild transient changes that resolve completely, to conditions leading to cerebral palsy and epilepsy. It is important to understand: such a diagnosis in the chart itself does not predict the future of the child. What matters are actual symptoms, examination data and how the baby develops over time.

Premature birth
Premature birth is birth occurring from the 22nd to the end of the 37th week of pregnancy. A child is born premature, and the shorter the term, the more immature his lungs, brain, and intestines are, and the higher the need for intensive care. The reasons are varied: infection, premature rupture of membranes, short cervix, multiple pregnancy, preeclampsia and other complications when childbirth has to be carried out early. It is impossible to prevent all cases, but in women at risk, the cervix can be measured in advance and prevention can be applied. If there are signs of the onset of labor, it is important to quickly get to the hospital: a few days gained allow you to speed up the maturation of the baby’s lungs and transport the mother to the perinatal center.

Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome
Respiratory distress syndrome is a breathing disorder in a newborn associated with a lack of surfactant. This substance lines the inside of the alveoli and prevents them from collapsing during exhalation. Its production improves towards the end of pregnancy, so the disease occurs primarily in premature babies and the more often the shorter the term. Without surfactant, part of the lungs collapses, the child has to spend enormous effort on each breath, and there is still not enough oxygen. Symptoms appear in the first hours of life: rapid breathing, retraction of the yielding areas of the chest, groaning when exhaling, bluish tint to the skin. The condition is treated in the neonatal unit and responds well to modern therapy.

Retinopathy of prematurity
The retinal vessels grow from the center to the periphery and complete their path only towards the end of pregnancy. In case of premature birth, this process is interrupted: the retina at the edge remains without blood vessels, experiences a lack of oxygen and, in response, triggers the growth of defective new vessels. They are fragile, bleed and drag along scar tissue, which can detach the retina. This is retinopathy of prematurity - one of the leading causes of childhood blindness, completely preventable with timely examination. Externally, the child’s eyes look absolutely normal, and it is impossible to notice the disease without a special examination.

Birth trauma of the cervical spine
Birth injury of the cervical spine is damage to the vertebrae, ligaments, muscles or spinal cord in the neck area received during childbirth. True trauma is rare and is associated with difficult childbirth: a large baby, breech presentation, the use of obstetric aids, rapid or, conversely, protracted labor. It manifests itself noticeably: the child holds his head to one side, moves his arm poorly, sucks sluggishly, and gets anxious when changing position. At the same time, the diagnosis is often made excessively, explaining the usual anxiety or regurgitation. Therefore, examination by a pediatric neurologist and neonatologist is important: some conditions require immediate assistance, while others require only observation.
