Thyrotoxicosis: symptoms and treatment of hyperthyroidism in Tashkent

Thyrotoxicosis is a condition in which there is an excess of thyroid hormones in the body. The metabolism accelerates, and the person literally “works at high speed”: the heart beats quickly, weight decreases with a good appetite, sweating, trembling and irritability appear. Symptoms can easily be mistaken for neurosis or heart problems, and patients often first see a cardiologist and psychotherapist. Meanwhile, the diagnosis is made by the same simple TSH test, and untreated thyrotoxicosis is dangerous for the heart and bones.

🚨 See a doctor urgently

With these signs do not wait for a scheduled appointment — the condition requires emergency care.

Symptoms

  • Palpitations, feeling of interruptions, pulse above 90 at rest
  • Weight loss with increased appetite
  • Sweating, poor heat tolerance, feeling of internal heat
  • Trembling in the hands and throughout the body
  • Irritability, anxiety, tearfulness, insomnia
  • Muscle weakness, especially in the hips: difficulty getting up from a chair, walking up stairs
  • Frequent bowel movements, menstrual irregularities
  • Enlarged neck, feeling of pressure
  • Eye symptoms of Graves' disease: bulging eyes, lacrimation, photophobia, double vision

Reasons

  • Graves' disease (diffuse toxic goiter) is an autoimmune disease, the most common cause; This is what causes eye damage
  • Toxic adenoma and multinodular toxic goiter - the node begins to autonomously produce hormones
  • Subacute thyroiditis - temporary release of hormones from an inflamed gland, often after a viral infection, with neck pain
  • Excessive use of thyroid hormone medications
  • Excess iodine, including from drugs and contrast agents
  • Postpartum thyroiditis

Diagnostics

Treatment: three ways

  • Beta blockers are prescribed early on to slow the heart rate and reduce shaking
  • When treating with thyreostatics, monitoring of a general blood test and liver tests is mandatory.
  • See a doctor immediately if you have a sore throat with a high fever while taking a thyreostatic drug - there may be a dangerous drop in white blood cell levels

Eyes and lifestyle

  • Endocrine ophthalmopathy develops with Graves' disease and requires joint management with an ophthalmologist
  • Smoking sharply worsens the course of the ocular form - refusal is mandatory
  • Moisturizing drops, protecting eyes from wind and sun, sleeping with the head of the bed raised
  • Limit coffee, strong tea and energy drinks - they increase heart rate
  • Avoid drugs and supplements containing iodine without a doctor's prescription
  • Adequate nutrition and protein: with thyrotoxicosis, energy expenditure is increased

Frequently asked questions: Thyrotoxicosis (hyperthyroidism)

What tests confirm thyrotoxicosis?+
Decreased TSH with elevated free T4 and T3. To determine the cause, they additionally look at antibodies to the TSH receptor, ultrasound, and, if necessary, scintigraphy.
What are the dangers of untreated thyrotoxicosis?+
First of all, for the heart: atrial fibrillation and heart failure develop. Bones also suffer, increasing the risk of osteoporosis. The extreme manifestation is a thyrotoxic crisis, which is life-threatening.
What to choose: pills, radioiodine or surgery?+
They usually start with thyreostatics for a course of 12–18 months. In case of relapse, large goiter, nodules or intolerance to drugs, radioiodine or surgery is chosen. The decision is made together with the doctor.
Is radioiodine therapy dangerous?+
This is a long-used and well-studied method. The natural outcome is often hypothyroidism, which is easily compensated for by one tablet of levothyroxine per day - this is considered an acceptable result of treatment.
Why do Graves' disease affect the eyes?+
The autoimmune process affects not only the gland, but also the tissue of the orbit. Smoking dramatically worsens the course of the ocular disease, so quitting it is a prerequisite for treatment.
Is it possible to eat seaweed and iodized salt?+
In case of thyrotoxicosis, excess iodine is undesirable: it can enhance the production of hormones. Iodine preparations and dietary supplements cannot be taken with it without a doctor’s prescription.
