How it proceeds
Is it contagious?
Pityriasis rosea is practically not transmitted: cases of infection of family members are rarely described and are considered an exception. There is no need to isolate the patient, provide separate utensils, or remove the child from school. At the same time, during illness it is wise to limit visits to the pool and public baths - not because of contagion, but because water with chlorine and steaming increase irritation.
Treatment
In most cases, no specific treatment is needed - the disease goes away on its own. Therapy is aimed at reducing itching and accelerating resolution of severe symptoms.
- For itching: antihistamines, short-course topical steroids
- Emollients for dry, flaky areas
- For extensive rashes and severe itching, your doctor may prescribe phototherapy or a short course of antiviral medications.
- Antibiotics and antifungals are not needed - they have no effect on this disease
What to Avoid
- Do not rub the skin with a washcloth or use scrubs - mechanical irritation worsens rashes and prolongs the disease
- Do not take hot baths, do not go to the bathhouse or sauna.
- Do not sunbathe or visit a solarium during the acute period
- Do not wear woolen or synthetic clothing close to the body - only cotton
- Do not lubricate rashes with iodine, alcohol, sulfur ointment and “folk” remedies
- Do not self-medicate with antifungal drugs: it is not a fungus
Showering is allowed and necessary: you can wash yourself, just without a washcloth, with warm water and a mild product, blotting your skin with a towel.
