Gangrene
Gangrene is the death of an area of the body that develops when tissues stop receiving blood or are destroyed by infection. Most often, the fingers and toes are affected in people with diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis of the arteries of the legs, less often - the hands, and if the vessels of the mesentery are damaged or the hernia is strangulated, gangrene can occur in the internal organs. The dry form develops slowly, the tissues darken and dry out; wet and gas flows rapidly, with swelling, foul-smelling discharge and severe intoxication, and poses a threat to life. Gangrene never goes away on its own and is not treated with ointments: urgent hospitalization, restoration of blood flow and surgical treatment are required.

Lymphedema (lymphostasis)
Lymphedema is persistent tissue swelling that occurs due to impaired lymph flow. Lymphatic vessels and nodes collect excess fluid and protein from tissues and return them to the blood. If this pathway is damaged or initially malformed, protein-rich fluid accumulates in the subcutaneous tissue. At first, the swelling is mild and decreases overnight, then it becomes dense, the skin thickens and becomes rough, and the limb increases in volume. More often the leg or arm is affected, less often the genitals and face. Lymphedema cannot be completely cured, but with early treatment, swelling can be kept under control and mobility can be maintained, so it is important not to delay a visit to the doctor.

Mesenteric thrombosis (intestinal infarction)
Mesenteric thrombosis is an acute cessation of blood flow in the mesenteric vessels supplying the intestines. Without blood, the intestinal wall quickly loses its viability, necrosis develops, the intestinal contents enter the abdominal cavity, and the condition becomes life-threatening. The cause may be a clot coming from the heart during atrial fibrillation, thrombosis on an atherosclerotic plaque, thrombosis of the mesenteric veins, or a sharp drop in blood flow during shock. The main feature is very severe abdominal pain with almost normal examination data in the first hours. If you experience such pain, you must immediately call an ambulance by calling 103.

Obliterating endarteritis (Buerger's disease)
Obliterating endarteritis, or Buerger's disease, is an inflammatory disease of small and medium-sized arteries and veins, most often of the hands and feet. Inflammation with clots develops in the lumen of the vessel, the blood flow is gradually blocked, and the tissues begin to suffer from a lack of oxygen. The disease is almost always associated with smoking and in the vast majority of cases develops in men under forty-five years of age. First, chilliness and pain in the feet when walking bother you, then the pain appears at rest, and non-healing ulcers appear on the fingers. The only method to stop progression is complete and final cessation of tobacco.

Acute thrombosis of the arteries of the lower extremities
Acute thrombosis or embolism of an artery of the lower extremity is a sudden blockage of blood flow, in which the tissues of the leg are left without oxygen. The cause is a clot that came from the heart during atrial fibrillation, or a blood clot that formed at the site of an atherosclerotic plaque. The leg suddenly becomes cold, pale, painful, the pulse disappears, sensitivity and movement are impaired. This is an emergency condition: the muscles begin to die irreversibly within a few hours, so the speed of treatment determines whether the limb can be saved. If you have such symptoms, you should immediately call an ambulance by calling 103.

Postthrombotic disease
Postthrombotic disease is a chronic condition that develops after deep vein thrombosis. The thrombus partially resolves over time, but the wall of the vein and its valves remain damaged: the blood begins to flow in the opposite direction and stagnates in the tissues of the lower leg. Because of this, the leg swells, becomes heavier in the evening, the skin darkens and thickens, and in advanced cases, a trophic ulcer forms. The problem develops gradually, sometimes years after thrombosis, and its severity directly depends on whether the person wears compression hosiery and whether it is observed by a doctor. It is impossible to completely restore the valves, but it is quite possible to slow down the disease.

Systemic vasculitis
Systemic vasculitis is a group of diseases in which the immune system attacks the wall of its own blood vessels. The inflamed vessel swells, its lumen narrows or is closed by a blood clot, and the tissues it nourishes lack oxygen. Since the vessels are everywhere, the manifestations are extremely varied: prolonged fever without obvious infection, weight loss, rash, pain in the joints and muscles, damage to the kidneys, lungs, nerves or eyes. Vasculitis is uncommon, but without timely treatment it can quickly damage vital organs, so early diagnosis is fundamentally important.

Carotid artery stenosis
The carotid arteries carry blood to the brain, and narrowing of their lumen by atherosclerotic plaque is dangerous primarily due to stroke. The plaque grows over the years and does not give any sensation for a long time: the brain receives enough blood through other vessels. Trouble happens when a blood clot breaks off from the surface of the plaque and clogs a cerebral artery. Sometimes this is preceded by short episodes of arm weakness, speech impairment, or temporary blindness in one eye—transient ischemic attacks. Detecting narrowing is simple and painless using ultrasound of neck vessels, and timely treatment significantly reduces the risk of stroke.
