Reasons for contacting
- tics: blinking, shoulder twitching, coughing, obsessive movements;
- enuresis and encopresis after an age when the skill should already be formed;
- sleep disorders: difficulty falling asleep, night terrors, sleepwalking;
- excessive physical activity, difficulty concentrating, impulsiveness;
- anxiety, fears, obsessive thoughts and rituals;
- sudden changes in behavior, aggression, isolation;
- delayed psycho-speech development;
- consequences of perinatal CNS damage.
Why is it important to separate the reasons?
The same symptom can be of different nature. Bedwetting may be due to immaturity of regulation, a urological problem or psychological stress in the family. Inattentiveness in class - due to attention problems, decreased hearing, or simply lack of sleep. The goal of the appointment is not to name the symptom, but to understand its mechanism: this determines whether an examination, classes with a specialist, a change in regimen, or medication support is needed.
What to expect from your first visit
The first meeting is almost always longer than the usual appointment: a significant part of the time is spent on the history of development and on observing the child. Often, based on the results, it is not treatment that is prescribed, but a further examination and a follow-up visit - because some conditions are assessed dynamically, and not simultaneously. Parents should discuss among themselves in advance what exactly is bothering them and from what point: discrepancies in memories are common.
