The thermometer is broken, what should I do?
⠀
Different situations happen in life, and what to do if the thermometer breaks.
⠀
We provide you with instructions:
⠀
1. Remove all people and animals from the premises.
⠀
2. Keep the room temperature as low as possible to reduce the rate of evaporation:
- open the window and close the door of the room;
- turn on the air conditioner;
- turn off all heating devices.
⠀
3. Make sure that mercury does not fall on the sole of your shoes, and you do not spread it throughout the room.
⠀
4. Prepare to collect mercury:
- be sure to wear rubber gloves;
- put on shoe covers (if you don’t have them, then wrap your feet with plastic bags);
- put on a cotton-gauze bandage, moistening it with water and soda in advance.
⠀
How to collect mercury?
⠀
Take a glass jar and fill it with cold water or a solution of potassium permanganate to collect mercury and thermometer fragments.
⠀
You can collect droplets-balls of mercury:
⠀
- a syringe or rubber bulb;
- two sheets of damp paper or newspaper;
- bandage;
- tape;
- wet cotton wool;
- plasticine;
- with a wet brush.
⠀
When you have collected all the mercury in a jar of cold water or potassium permanganate solution, immediately screw the lid tightly on and keep the jar itself away from heating devices and direct sunlight.
⠀
Do not throw away the can, but hand it over to the waste department.
⠀
After collecting mercury:
⠀
- create a draft at home;
- wash the soles of your shoes with potassium permanganate;
- also hand over gloves and other cleaning materials to the waste management department;
- rinse your mouth with a light solution of potassium permanganate;
- brush your teeth well;
- take 2-3 tablets of activated carbon;
- drink plenty of fluids.
⠀
Remember that mercury poisoning is very dangerous for the body!
