Why does watermelon increase potency?
Watermelon is a natural source of citrulline, an amino acid with a vasodilating effect. The mechanism of action of citrulline on the vessels of the penis is vaguely reminiscent of sildenafil, the active ingredient of the “blue pills”.
In the body, citrulline is transformed into another amino acid - arginine. Arginine is a donor of nitric oxide, which increases blood flow to the penis and ensures a lasting erection.
Since watermelon is composed primarily of water, concentrated watermelon juice offers the highest citrulline content. We can actually consume this product as a source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and male strength.
What the Research Says
The effect of watermelon and citrulline on potency is a relatively new area of science. Most of the studies were modest, and were carried out exclusively on animals.
Thus, it is too early to talk about convincing evidence in favor of “natural Viagra”.
Doctors are pleased that watermelon and watermelon juice are harmless products that can be consumed in large quantities. This means that most men can safely try watermelon juice or citrulline supplements.
But let's look at the facts.
In 2011, scientists observed 24 men with mild erectile dysfunction (ED) who took a placebo for a month, followed by citrulline. In the first case, half of the participants noted a significant increase in potency, and only two in the placebo group. Men who took citrulline had sex an average of 1.37 times a month before the experiment, and 2.3 times after.
None of the participants reported any side effects.
Two years later, in 2013, experiments were conducted with male rats suffering from arteriogenic, or vascular erectile dysfunction. In rodents, blood flow in the penis was impaired. Over the course of several weeks, rats were given citrulline and experienced improved blood flow and erections compared to placebo.
In 2014, another study looked at the effects of fresh watermelon pulp extract on potency in rodents.
Males who were fed watermelon extract daily were more actively interested in the opposite sex and mated more often. The authors noted a pronounced increase in libido and erection. In all cases, watermelon and citrulline were well tolerated.
And just recently, in the journal Andrology, Italian scientists reported details of an amazing work involving male volunteers. Vascular impotence has been found to be closely associated with a deficiency of certain amino acids, including arginine. This suggests that consuming citrulline or arginine helps treat erectile dysfunction. Men need to remember that watermelon is probably not as effective as sildenafil and other PDE5 inhibitors.
It is also clear that watermelon juice and citrulline will not help men who are unable to achieve an erection with Viagra. Citrulline works by dilating blood vessels, so supplementation will not help with nerve damage or other causes of ED. Side effects of watermelon for erectile dysfunction Watermelon is considered a safe product even in large quantities. If you are not allergic to watermelon, you can safely introduce it into your daily diet. If you have diabetes, you should discuss with a specialist how much watermelon you can eat. Watermelon and other fruits can increase blood sugar levels, so they should not be consumed in excess.
Watermelon juice and watermelon are low-calorie foods, so there is no need to worry about weight gain.
No studies have found serious side effects associated with watermelon in healthy men or animals. You can safely try watermelon as an alternative to Viagra or even use it in parallel with sildenafil.
With or without bones?
A logical question: how many and what kind of watermelons should you eat to get the maximum dose of citrulline?
A 2005 study tells us that watermelons with yellow and orange flesh contain slightly more citrulline than red ones.
Meanwhile, varieties with or without seeds contain the same concentrations of this “male” amino acid.
For maximum effect, American nutritionists recommend preparing smoothies from watermelon and other fruits.
The perfect cocktail for a cheerful day and a romantic evening!
