Enlargement of the mammary glands in men is called gynecomastia.

- For men in the modern world, this phenomenon has the nature of an epidemic. According to various foreign sources, up to 70 percent of all men of different ages suffer from gynecomastia of one form or another. This is a serious social and medical problem: men are turning into women, says the specialist.

- Breasts grow in those men who eat a lot?
- At the heart of the problem, of course, is overeating. First of all, this applies to children and adolescents. Young people aged 12-13 years are often overfed. First, they develop excess fat deposits in the abdomen and lower back. During puberty, the breasts begin to react. The body develops according to the female type. Sometimes I observe in teenagers a complete resemblance of female breasts. The worst thing is, for the most part, doctors in clinics deny the problem. When teenagers turn to therapists and endocrinologists, they are told to wait until they are 18 years old, they wave their hand, they say, don’t worry, it will go away on its own. But nothing happens. Often the breasts increase in size even more. And while the boy waits for it to “go away on its own,” he develops complexes, he is embarrassed to play sports, and cannot begin sexual activity. There are many such patients now.

- If a person goes on a diet, won’t the breasts go away?
- Nothing will change: what has grown has grown. And they grew up because they were fed incorrectly in childhood. Fast food, soda, chocolates did their job - the food bacchanalia had been going on since birth.

- What is the average age of your patients?
- They apply when they can afford such an operation. These are no longer teenagers.

- How complicated is the operation?
- The operation lasts from 20 minutes to half an hour. Although sometimes men come to me who have grown real large female breasts. Then you have to do serious plastic surgery: remove the mammary glands, tighten the skin, reduce areolas, restore the natural male shape.

- Restore, and the patient will go and feed the breast again.

- He won’t eat anymore because we removed the gland. If the patient continues to eat incorrectly, he will simply get sick. Breasts grow not from a one-time trip to McDonald's, but from a violation of proper nutrition in general. Just 30 years ago there weren't as many obese teenagers as there are now.

- Besides poor nutrition, are there other causes of this disease?
- Breasts can become enlarged due to hormonal imbalance, but this is a rare case. As a mass phenomenon, gynecomastia originates from childhood.

- Tell us the most shocking cases in your practice?
- One day the grandmother of a 13-year-old teenager who had grown female breasts called me. I sent a photo of the boy. I was shocked. The teenager turned out to have breast size 4 or 5. Then I found out that the grandmother raised her grandson alone, fattened him up, his breasts grew, the boy became isolated in his problem and withdrew into himself. I tried to explain to the pensioner that the guy needs to be rid of a feminine attribute that will not allow him to live a normal life. He will not be able to communicate with boys, he will be embarrassed to undress, he will not play sports, he will not meet a girl. He warned that the sooner we get rid of the problem, the easier it will be for him in the further development of personal growth. To which my grandmother replied that the therapists at the clinic asked me not to do anything and just press on, maybe it will go away on its own.

- Didn’t it pass?
“A year later, the woman called me again, sobbing into the phone. She asked me to save my grandson. She complained that over the course of a year, her grandson had undergone serious changes in his psyche - he stopped attending school, did not go outside, slept during the day, played on the computer at night, and had no friends left. I asked to bring the boy to the reception. The woman said that he would not go because he had been sleeping all day. Perhaps the boy’s mental problems are not only due to female breasts, but as he grew older, breasts played a role.

- When men got rid of an unnecessary body part, did they begin a different life?
- A patient came to me who had been saving for an operation for 10 years. At the time of contacting specialists, he was 25 years old, and he developed gynecomastia at the age of 13. He didn’t break down, but for all 10 years he dreamed of getting rid of his breasts. At first my parents didn’t let me, then my doctors dissuaded me. Finally he grew up, saved up the required amount and was ready for the operation. And yes, when he regained his male appearance, his life began to sparkle with bright colors.

- Why do therapists discourage such operations?
- Because they don’t see the problem. The most common answer from doctors to young people is: “Wait, stop, when you turn 18, it will go away on its own.” They also encourage me: “Why do you need surgery? Let this be your signature feature.” One therapist even told the guy: “If you get married, the breasts will go away on their own.” The young man then asked: “How will he leave? Does Mendelssohn's March have an impact? Our doctors have such a narrowed consciousness that some seriously believe that as soon as a young man begins to be sexually active, all problems go away. Parents of such teenagers also add fuel to the fire by dissuading them from operations with the words: “We love you just the way they are.”

- Do your patients somehow hide their breasts from others?
- Those who have grown large, round female breasts wear loose shirts and sweaters. In some patients, the breasts grow to the first size, but the nipples swell, which are visible through the T-shirt. They begin to slouch to hide their weakness. Naturally, posture is disturbed, the back is rounded, scoliosis and osteochondrosis develop - all these are satellites of gynecomastia. Subsequently, a long-term habit of slouching is developed. And even after surgery, people cannot straighten their shoulders.

- After breast removal, do you recommend patients to go on a diet?
- People come to me when they are convinced that they themselves cannot get rid of breasts, although they have begun to lead a healthy lifestyle. Sports and a healthy lifestyle do not help get rid of the problem. All their stories are like carbon copies: “I was a fat teenager, then I went to the gym, I eat normally, but the breasts remained. It’s not getting any smaller.” Perhaps, when losing weight, a person’s fat will go away, but the gland that grew during adolescence will not disappear.
