OBESITY AS AN EPIDEMIC

Eating habits play a leading role in the reproductive health of men: for example, in some cases, obesity in men is one of the causes of infertility, and in others it is the key problem of childless couples. This conclusion was reached by researchers from the University of Porto (Portugal). The research results were published in the journal Current Pharmaceutical Design.

Currently, obesity is already becoming an epidemic: for example, over the past 30 years, the number of overweight people in developing countries has quadrupled and is already about a billion people. As you know, being overweight increases the risk of developing many serious diseases - cardiovascular, diabetes, cancer. Obesity is also associated with male infertility.

According to the lead author of the study, Mark Alves, it has not yet been possible to discover exactly how the hormones of the gastrointestinal tract, the disruption of which causes obesity, affect the state of the reproductive sphere of men. A complete elucidation of the influence of these hormones on male fertility will help to find the shortest path to effective treatment for male infertility associated with obesity.

However, not every overweight man has any reason to worry about infertility. In order to know for sure whether there is cause for concern, it is enough to calculate your body mass index, then divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. If the result obtained is equal to or greater than 30, there is a real threat of obesity, which can cause reproductive disorders.
