Microorganisms in urine
The urine of a healthy person does not contain microorganisms and is sterile. Due to various pathologies, an infection may appear in the ureters. The source of microbial spread may be the bladder, urinary tract or urethra. If bacterial growth is detected and increased in the ureters, the presence of a urinary tract infection is not questioned. In this case, as a rule, one type of microorganism is detected. If your urine culture reveals many different species, your doctor will recommend retesting.
Signs of the presence of microorganisms in urine
Urine culture is prescribed if a urological disease is suspected. There is a set of symptoms that indicate the presence of an infection. The most common are cramps and pain when urinating, frequent urges, and aching pain below the abdomen. Poor urination may also indicate the spread of bacteria.
Urine may contain bloody impurities, have a whitish tint and heterogeneous consistency. If the infection is concentrated in the urethra or bladder, the body temperature will remain normal, but if it increases, there is a high risk of kidney infection. This likelihood increases with symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and nagging pain in the lower back.
Typology of microorganisms
Most often, one type of microbe can be found in urine, but there may be exceptions.
Let's look at the most common types:
• Eschichiria collie, better known as E. coli, is found in the lower gastrointestinal tract. The infection enters the body through the genitals and can reach the bladder. The bacterium multiplies very quickly and can cause complications such as cystitis, urethritis or pyelonephritis.
• Enterococcus fecalis is a type of bacterium that lives as part of healthy human microflora and takes part in the digestive process. When the bacteria enters the ureters through stool particles, it begins to actively multiply. The infection is highly resistant to antibiotics and is quite difficult to eradicate.
• Friedlander's bacillus or Klebsiella pneumoniae is a type of bacterium whose infection can lead to pneumonia. The ureter infection it can cause is most common in children and the elderly, and in people with weak immune systems. To eliminate the infection, it is necessary to select a special treatment regimen from a specialist, because The bacterium is resistant to many antibiotics.
• The Proteus bacterium is a component of healthy gastrointestinal microflora. The infection occurs when it enters the genitals through feces. When infected, the patient experiences an unnaturally dark color of urine with a strong unpleasant odor. In the presence of red blood cells, the urine takes on a reddish tint. Frequent symptoms include a burning sensation when emptying the bladder and frequent urges.
• Lactobacillus is present in healthy patients in the gastrointestinal tract and ureters. Thanks to this bacterium, when lactic acid is released, an unfavorable environment is formed for the spread of certain pathogens. Lactobacillus does not cause serious harm to health, but if it is detected in the urine, treatment is necessary.
Treatment of urinary infections
There is an opinion that the presence of bacteria in urine without pronounced symptoms does not pose a threat to health and self-destructs. This statement is unacceptable in cases where the bacteria are found in pregnant women, the elderly and patients with weakened immune systems. For pregnant patients, this can lead to serious complications for the development of the embryo. Increased vulnerability is also observed in people with urolithiasis, urinary tract reflux and in patients who have undergone kidney transplant surgery.
Asymptomatic bacteriuria can lead over time to frequent urges, pain and burning when urinating, an unpleasant odor, and bloody clots in the urine. In these cases, it is imperative to consult a doctor as soon as possible.
In modern medicine, existing methods for treating infections in the urine are still not regulated. For each individual patient, the treatment regimen should be selected individually depending on the characteristics of the body and other medical factors.
