How to deal with penile curvature in men? Peyronie's disease

Curvature of the penis in men is quite common. In some cases, pathology causes pain. When the genital organ is bent, the quality of intimate life usually noticeably decreases.

Varieties of the disease

The following types of pathology are distinguished:

• ventral curvature of the penis;

• lateral deformation of the penis;

• dorsal curvature of the genital organ.

With ventral curvature, the genital organ is directed downward, with dorsal curvature, it is directed upward. Lateral curvature refers to the lateral deformation of the genital organ.

Important! The angle of rotation of the genital organ can be 90°. In complex cases, twisting of the corpora cavernosa around its own axis is observed.

Causes of the problem

There are various causes of penile curvature. The pathology can be congenital or acquired. With congenital curvature of the penis, the corresponding defect manifests itself during the formation of cells of the body of the genital organ in the womb. Quite often, the cause of the problem is the disproportion of the tricky bodies due to the deformation of the protein shell.

Congenital curvature of the penis can also be caused by the presence of a shortened urethra in a child. A fairly common cause of defects in the structure of the penis is a deficiency of sex hormones in the mother’s body during pregnancy.

Factors that provoke curvature of the penis in a child are listed below:

• prolonged stress during pregnancy;

• alcohol abuse;

• addiction to cigarettes;

• multiple pregnancy;

• infection of the fetus during intrauterine development.

Important! A penis that is curved from birth is more susceptible to various injuries. In the future, men will develop edema, hematomas, and fractures of the genital organ. With constant injury to the penis, the existing curvature is aggravated. Therefore, parents need to make an appointment with a urologist in a timely manner!

Acquired curvature of the penis may be a consequence of an organ fracture or Peyronie's disease. After the injury caused by the fracture heals, scars may form. This is what causes the penis to bend downward or in a different direction.

More about Peyronie's disease

The mechanism of Peyronie's disease is quite complex. With this pathology, plaques can form in the area of the tunica albuginea or cavernous bodies, and scar tissue grows. Due to these anomalies, the elasticity of tissues in certain areas decreases. When an erection occurs, the corresponding tissues stretch rather weakly, so the genital organ bends in a certain direction. With Peyronie's disease, problems appear in sexual relationships, and erectile dysfunction often occurs.

When treating the disease, both surgical and conservative methods are used. The main goals of conservative treatment are to reduce inflammation and eliminate discomfort in the pelvic area.

The occurrence of Peyronie's disease can be triggered by the following factors:

• diabetes mellitus;

• local fibrosis;

• high level of serotonin in the body;

• hereditary predisposition;

• endocrine imbalance;

• long-term use of adrenergic blockers.

Local fibrosis is quite rare. The pathology occurs against the background of a fracture of the genital organ or prolonged intracavernous injections. Local fibrosis is treated mainly with the same methods as congenital deformation of the genital organ.

The use of physiotherapeutic techniques for curvature of the genital organ

Correction of penile curvature can also be carried out through physiotherapy sessions. This technique goes well with the use of medications. The most frequently performed physiotherapeutic procedures are:

• ultrasound therapy sessions;

• electrophoresis;

• use of laser radiation;

• shock wave therapy sessions.

Surgical methods for treating the disease

If conservative methods of treating a disease such as curvature of the penis are ineffective, surgery is necessary. The decision to choose a specific technique is made after undergoing the appropriate diagnostic procedures.

In case of curvature of the genital organ, the following is carried out:

• removal of plaques and excess fatty tissue with laser. This technique allows you to restore impaired blood supply and normalize cellular metabolism. This method is optimal if a child has a curvature of the penis;

• removal of muscle tissue in the affected area. Cosmetic smoothing reducesthe likelihood of injury to the patient’s ligamentous apparatus;

• penile prosthetics. It comes down to implanting an artificial rod into the body of the phallus in order to straighten the penis.

The total duration of the operation is usually no more than two hours. After surgery, the doctor applies special dressings using self-adhesive elastic bandages. This is necessary in order to reduce the patient’s discomfort and prevent the occurrence of hematomas.

The first dressing is usually performed on the second day of surgery. In most cases, sutures from the penis are removed 8-10 days after surgery, depending on the rate of wound healing. After the operation, the stronger sex is advised to abstain from sexual relations for a period of 2-3 months.

Pay attention! To date, innovative surgical techniques have been developed. They do not involve suturing the tunica albuginea in cases of penile curvature. The affected areas are “restored” with artificial materials or fragments of the patient’s skin. At the same time, the appearance of manhood does not change significantly.

Disadvantages of surgical treatment

After surgery, the patient may experience the following complications:

• slight shortening of the patient's genital organ;

• violation of the integrity of the urethra;

• decreased sensitivity of the head of the penis.

Sometimes patients who have undergone surgery complain of pain and discomfort due to granulomas that form at the ends of the sutures. When performing the operation, non-absorbable threads are used. Otherwise, a relapse of the disease may occur.

Taking medications for penile curvature

Medications are used at an early stage of the disease or if there are contraindications to surgery. How to treat curvature of the penis with medications? Typically, the patient is prescribed medications containing vitamin E. This substance is endowed with pronounced antioxidant properties.

The use of drugs that prevent excess collagen production in the body is also indicated.

Important! Medicines often cause side effects. Therefore, you should consult your doctor before using them.

Preventive measures

To prevent a disease such as curvature of the penis, you need to adhere to the following recommendations:

• it is necessary to avoid injury to the penis whenever possible;

• it is necessary to strengthen the walls of blood vessels. Indeed, with the appearance of atherosclerotic changes in the vessels, the condition of the albuginea of the organ noticeably worsens;

• you need to monitor the level of vitamin E and serotonin in the body.

Treatment for penile curvature must be timely. Otherwise, the pathology can lead to serious nervous disorders, impotence, and male infertility.
