These five habits will extend your healthy life by 10 years
Scientists have explained what lifestyle factors and bad habits you need to pay attention to in order to live much longer without diabetes, heart disease and cancer. In their work, they analyzed how many years of healthy life abstinence from smoking, alcohol and unhealthy eating, as well as weight control and physical activity, could add to our lives. The results of the study were published in BMJ.
“We have found that following a healthy lifestyle can significantly extend the years a person lives without disease. In particular, women who followed all five factors added 10 years to healthy life, and men added almost 8 years,” said study co-author Frank Hu.
The study included 38,366 men and 73,196 women, who were followed for 28 and 34 years, respectively. The researchers assessed the impact of five healthy lifestyle factors: a healthy weight (body mass index below 25), at least 30 minutes of physical activity daily, moderate alcohol consumption, a good diet and non-smoking.
According to the findings, women aged 50 with all of these healthy habits lived 14 years longer than women who did not have these habits, and men lived 12 years longer.
Women whose lifestyle included 4 or 5 healthy habits over the next 20 to 30 years had an additional 10.6 disease-free years compared to women who did not change bad habits. On average, this was 8 years without cancer, 10 years without cardiovascular disease and 12 years without diabetes. For men, healthy life expectancy increased by 7.6 years. On average, 6 years without cancer, almost 9 years without heart disease and more than 10 years without diabetes.
In cases where cancer was diagnosed during the study, those participants who practiced 4 of the 5 healthy habits lived an additional 23 years. Whereas those who continued to lead an unhealthy lifestyle - only 11 years. A similar pattern was observed in heart disease and diabetes.
“Healthy lifestyle habits not only prolong life, but also improve quality of life and reduce suffering associated with chronic diseases. It’s never too late to adopt these habits,” said Frank Hu.
