WHAT IS PROCTOLOGY?

The field of proctology includes diseases such as:

* Hemorrhoids and its complications,

* Anal fissure,

* Paraproctitis acute and chronic (pararectal fistulas),

* UC (nonspecific ulcerative colitis),

* Crohn's disease,

* Rectal polyps,

* Anal itching,

* Prolapse of the rectal mucosa,

* Pilonidal cyst (epithelial coccygeal duct),

* Pustular lesion of the skin of the perineum,

* Severe constipation,

* and other diseases of the rectum.

Anal fissure

An anal fissure (anal fissure) is a linear defect in the lining of the anal canal. The most common causes of anal fissure are:

* chronic constipation, diarrhea;

* chronic or acute hemorrhoids;

* heavy physical activity;

* sedentary lifestyle;

* love of spicy food, alcohol;

* trauma to the mucous membrane of the anal canal with hard feces or foreign objects;

* childbirth can provoke the occurrence of anal fissure in women.

Acute anal fissures are treated conservatively and only under the supervision of a coloproctologist. In the absence of treatment, or with inadequate treatment, the disease becomes chronic. Such a crack cannot be treated conservatively, and the patient requires surgical treatment.

What are hemorrhoids?

In each person, during embryonic development, two venous hemorrhoidal plexuses are formed - the external one, at the very edge of the anus, and the internal one. In an adult, the internal plexus is located at a depth of 1.5–4 centimeters.

Hemorrhoids and its complications:

* Anal fissures (chronic and acute);

* Rectal fistula;

* Ulcers;

* Loss of ability to control stool output;

* Swelling of the anus;

* Massive rectal bleeding;

* Purulent inflammation of fiber (paraproctitis);

* Necrosis of hemorrhoidal tissue (necrosis);

* Blood poisoning (in very advanced cases).

Hemorrhoids are common during pregnancy and childbirth. Pregnancy provokes or aggravates hemorrhoids.

What is paraproctitis?

Paraproctitis is a purulent inflammation of the tissue surrounding the rectum, caused by the spread of infection from the anal glands. This is one of the most severe diseases of the rectum, accompanied by serious complications and often becoming chronic and recurrent.

The reasons for the development of paraproctitis are factors that contribute to a decrease in local protective immune factors in the rectum. Very often, paraproctitis develops against the background of hemorrhoids and anal fissures; it can be a complication of rectal and anal cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases - ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.

The diagnosis of acute paraproctitis is established after examining the patient, examining the rectum, and, if necessary, using ultrasound, MRI or MSCT.

What is a rectal fistula?

Rectal fistula (rectal fistula, chronic paraproctitis) is a pathological communication of the rectum with the external environment.

The cause of rectal fistula is most often acute paraproctitis, as well as hemorrhoids and fissures. Less commonly, fistulas are caused by trauma, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis.

For diagnosis, it is necessary to examine the rectum using a special device - sigmoidoscopy, anoscopy, examination with a probe. In cases of complex rectal fistulas, it often happens that additional examinations are necessary - fistulography, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

The only effective method of dealing with rectal fistulas is planned surgical intervention.
