Antibodies to Cyclic Citrullinated Peptide – ACCP (ACCP)
Antibodies to Cyclic Citrullinated Peptide – ACCP (ACCP).
The head of the laboratory of the VITAMED MEDICAL clinic, candidate of biological sciences, Averyanova Anna Aleksandrovna, will talk in this article about the specific diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis.
ACCP is a modern method for diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis. It is the most effective serological information marker of the disease and has been widely used over the past few years. The method is based on the use of synthetic citrulline peptide. The sensitivity of the test is 80%, and the specificity reaches 98%. Thanks to this accuracy, it is possible to diagnose a patient at an early stage of rheumatoid arthritis and begin treatment without waiting for complications and an increase in the extent of localization.
The essence of the analysis:
Citrulline refers to products produced during metabolism in the body during biochemical reactions. Under normal conditions, this substance does not take part in the production of protein and is excreted from the body. With rheumatoid arthritis, there is a complete change, both qualitative and quantitative, in the enzyme composition. As a result, citrulline joins the amino acid chain of peptides in the cartilage tissue of the joint. As a result, proteins containing citrulline begin to be rejected by the body as foreign. A response occurs - the immune system produces specific antibodies to cyclic citrullinated peptide (ACCP).
Advantages of the technique:
An ACCP analysis allows one to detect antibodies in the body even before the disease becomes severely symptomatic.
Based on an accurate diagnosis, it is possible to begin the use of therapeutic measures and prevent destructive processes in the connective tissues of the joints, i.e. avoid their globalization.
Even in cases where the x-ray did not show the presence of the disease, but there are signs indicating disorders, the ACCP test will allow them to be detected.
How the analysis is performed:
At the VITAMED MEDICAL clinic, the analysis is carried out in blood serum using the immunochemiluminescence method in automatic mode on the Siemens “Immulite -2000XPi” analyzer.
The result of the study can be obtained on the same day.
Normally, the content of ACCP in the blood serum should be up to 17 U/ml. If higher values were found during the diagnostic process, this indicates the development of rheumatoid arthritis. The higher the result, the more actively the disease and inflammatory processes progress. Based on this, specialists use ACCP indicators to determine the clinical picture of the pathology. This helps to select the most appropriate treatment and achieve a successful outcome.
The use of the ACCP method in the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis significantly increases the patient’s chances of a quick recovery, restoration of the damaged joint and return to its functionality.
The ACCP determination is intended only for the examination of patients for the presence of rheumatoid arthritis and is used in laboratory diagnostics solely for this purpose.
