Allergy panels at the Vitamed Medical clinic
The head of the laboratory of the VITAMED MEDICAL clinic, candidate of biological sciences, Anna Aleksandrovna Averyanova, will talk about allergy panels in this article.
BLOOD TEST FOR ALLERGENS
An allergy is a hypersensitive reaction of the body that occurs in response to exposure to foreign substances (allergens). An allergen is essentially an antigen. In response to the penetration of an irritant into the body of a person predisposed to allergies, specific antibodies (immunoglobulins E) are produced. By examining the level of immunoglobulin E in the blood, we can conclude that there is sensitization of the body as a whole. Detection of these antibodies is possible using immunological blood tests. The main objective of these studies is to determine the causative allergen or allergens.
Immunological research methods are qualitative and quantitative. The first ones only allow you to determine the presence of an allergy to a certain component. Quantitative methods allow you to determine the level of antibodies.
PREPARATION FOR THE STUDY
No special preparation is required before conducting the study. But you should still adhere to the following recommendations:
1. The study should be done in the morning;
2. Last meal approximately ten hours before;
3. Do not drink alcohol during the day;
4. Do not smoke an hour before the procedure;
5. In a couple of days, eliminate physical and, importantly, emotional stress.
Immunolaboratory research methods have their undeniable advantages:
• Possibility of conducting diagnostic studies for children under two years of age;
• Possibility of conducting research during an exacerbation of allergies;
• Determination of polyvalent sensitization;
• Identification of cross-reactivity to allergens;
• Safety for the patient, since the study does not provoke additional sensitization.
MULTIPLE CHEMILUMINESCENCE METHOD (MAST-CLA)
At the VITAMED MEDICAL clinic, panels on which allergens are located are used to conduct the MACT allergy test. The allergy panel is filled with the patient's serum. If a patient is allergic to a specific allergen, specific antibodies are detected in a blood sample. To visualize antibodies, the laboratory technician adds a special enzyme. The enzyme, interacting with the antibody, causes luminescence, which can be detected on special equipment.
You can determine the cause of allergies using allergy panels:
Each panel contains from two to five allergens.
• Food allergens:
peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts, coconut, walnut
salmon, cod, tuna, shrimp, mussels
wheat, oats, corn, buckwheat, sesame
orange, banana, apple, peach
egg white, rice, milk, soy
tomato, carrots, potatoes, garlic
beef, lamb, chicken, pork
• Animal allergens:
hair of a dog, cat, cow, horse
• Household allergens:
house dust, book dust, cockroach
• Fungal allergens:
penicillin, candida, cladosporium, aspergillus
Which test to choose?
With all the variety of modern diagnostic techniques, there is no universal “gold standard” for diagnosing allergies. Each test has its own advantages and disadvantages, as well as indications and contraindications.
Therefore, if you suspect you have allergy symptoms, we do not recommend diagnosing this condition yourself; to select a specific set of tests, you should contact an allergist. With its help, you can select an examination program that will be the most informative in each specific case for the correct diagnosis and choice of treatment regimen.
