November 12 is World Pneumonia Day
World Pneumonia Day, which is celebrated annually on November 12, appeared on the calendar at the initiative of the Global Coalition against Childhood Pneumonia. This is the name of the association of international, governmental, non-governmental and local organizations, research institutions and educational institutions, foundations and citizen activists. The coalition seeks to bring the issue of pneumonia to the attention of government officials, health care professionals and potential donors.
Pneumonia is an infectious lung disease that most often affects children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.
In 2009, the World Health Organization and UNICEF announced the Global Action Plan to Prevent and Control Pneumonia. The goal of this plan is to intensify the fight against pneumonia through a combination of child protection, prevention and treatment measures.
By the way, it is children who suffer from pneumonia first of all. This disease is the leading cause of death among minors worldwide. It kills 1.4 million children under the age of five every year. This is more than AIDS, malaria and measles combined.
