Night terrors in children
Night terrors are episodes in which a child, an hour or two after falling asleep, suddenly sits up or jumps up, screams, cries, looks very scared, has dilated pupils, rapid heartbeat and sweating. At the same time, he does not truly wake up: he does not recognize his parents, does not respond to consolation, and may push away. The episode lasts from a few minutes to half an hour and ends with the child falling asleep again and not remembering anything in the morning. This is not a mental disorder or a sign of trauma, but a feature of immature sleep in the deep slow-wave sleep phase. For most children, fears go away on their own with age.

Acute reaction to stress (nervous breakdown)
Acute stress reaction is a short-term disorder that develops in the first minutes and hours after an exceptionally difficult event: an accident, an attack, news of the death of a loved one, a natural disaster. A person may look stunned and inhibited, not answer questions, or, on the contrary, may rush around, scream, and find no place for himself. Perception is often disrupted: what is happening seems unreal, and some events are not remembered later. This is not a mental illness, but an understandable response of the psyche to overload, and in most cases the condition goes away within a few hours or days. The main thing during this period is safety, presence nearby and calm support.

Postpartum depression
Postpartum depression is a depressive disorder that develops during the first weeks and months after childbirth. This is not a weakness of character or “bad motherhood,” but a disease associated with sudden hormonal changes, lack of sleep, stress and psychological factors. The woman experiences persistent melancholy, anxiety, guilt, is not happy about the child, loses strength and interest in life. Unlike short-term “baby blues,” symptoms last longer than two weeks and interfere with caring for yourself and your baby. Without treatment, depression can linger and affect relationships with your child and family. Postpartum depression is well treated with psychotherapy and medications compatible with feeding. If your child is thinking about suicide or harming himself, he needs immediate help.

Irritability and angry outbursts
Irritability is an increased readiness to react with anger or harshness to ordinary, previously unaffected little things. It is not a disease in itself, but a signal: the body or psyche is working to the limit. Most often, it is caused by lack of sleep, chronic fatigue, pain, anxiety or low mood, less often - hormonal changes, iron deficiency, side effects of medications and the consequences of quitting alcohol or nicotine. If outbursts of anger are repeated, destroy relationships, or are replaced by feelings of guilt and emptiness, you need to sort it out not through willpower, but together with a specialist. The good news is that in most cases the cause is treatable and the condition improves noticeably within a few weeks.

Adjustment disorder
Adaptation disorder is a pronounced and prolonged reaction to a specific life event: dismissal, divorce, moving, serious illness, loss, serious changes in the family. A person understands the cause of his condition, but cannot return to his usual life: anxiety, depression, irritability and sleep disturbances interfere with work, study and communication. Symptoms usually appear within a month of the event and gradually decrease as the situation resolves or the person adjusts. This is not a weakness of character or a whim, but a recognized condition that lends itself well to psychological help. It is worth contacting when experiences disrupt daily life.

Selective mutism in children
Selective mutism is a condition in which a child speaks freely in a familiar environment, most often at home with loved ones, but remains consistently silent in certain situations: in kindergarten, school, at the doctor’s, with unfamiliar adults. This is not stubbornness, not whim, or lack of speech: the child wants to speak, but severe anxiety literally blocks the voice. Usually the condition is noticed at three to five years of age or upon entering kindergarten and school. Without help, silence becomes entrenched, interferes with learning and friendships, and over time develops into persistent social anxiety. The good news is that with proper behavioral work and family support, most children begin to speak.

Chronic stress
Chronic stress is a state of prolonged tension when the load does not stop and the body does not have time to recover. Unlike short-term stress, which mobilizes and ends with release, constant stress keeps the body in readiness mode for weeks and months. Over time, this becomes debilitating: insomnia, headaches, muscle tension, digestive problems, irritability and the feeling that you don’t have enough strength even to do your usual things. Long-term stress is not a separate disease, but it increases the risk of hypertension, exacerbation of gastritis, anxiety and depressive disorders. Emotional burnout
Emotional burnout is a state of exhaustion that develops due to prolonged work stress that has not been overcome. It is described by three signs: a feeling of emptiness and lack of strength, mental withdrawal from work with irritation and cynicism, and a feeling of decreased self-efficacy. This is not a diagnosis of mental illness, but a factor affecting health, but its consequences are very real: insomnia, headaches, problems with blood pressure and digestion, an increased risk of depression and alcohol abuse. Burnout develops gradually and rarely goes away with one vacation: changes in workload and routine are necessary, and sometimes the help of a specialist.

Encopresis (fecal incontinence in children)
Encopresis is the involuntary release of feces in a child over four years of age, that is, the age when control skills are usually already formed. Parents most often describe this as stains on linen, and the first reaction is often accusations of laziness and inattention. In fact, in the vast majority of cases, encopresis is associated with prolonged constipation: dense masses stretch the rectum, sensitivity to urge decreases, and more liquid contents flow around the plug and come out without the child’s control. The child really doesn’t feel it and can’t stop it. Therefore, the basis of treatment is not discipline, but normalization of stool and calm work with the child.

Insomnia and sleep disorders
Insomnia is not just “I don’t sleep well,” but a condition in which sleep disturbance occurs at least three nights a week and affects daytime well-being. Its main feature is that over time it breaks away from the original cause and begins to support itself: a person is afraid of not falling asleep, goes to bed with anxiety, and it is this anxiety that prevents sleep.
