Streptococcal infection
Streptococci are a large group of bacteria, of which beta-hemolytic streptococcus group A is the most important. It causes acute tonsillopharyngitis, scarlet fever, erysipelas, impetigo, and in unfavorable cases - complications from the heart, joints and kidneys. The peculiarity of this infection is that a timely and complete course of antibiotics not only speeds up recovery, but also prevents rheumatic fever. Therefore, if you suspect streptococcal sore throat, it is important not to guess, but to confirm the diagnosis with a smear, and not stop treatment as soon as it becomes easier.

Ringworm (trichophytia, microsporia)
Ringworm is a contagious fungal infection of the skin, hair and, less commonly, nails, caused by the dermatophyte fungi Microsporum and Trichophyton. Hence the medical names - microsporia and trichophytosis. Children get sick more often, becoming infected from stray cats and dogs or from other children. Round lesions appear on the scalp, where the hair is broken off at a height of several millimeters, as if it had been cut, and the skin peels off. Pink rings with a raised, flaky ridge along the edge form on smooth skin. The disease is not life-threatening, but is easily transmitted to others. Treatment is prescribed by a dermatologist; if the head is affected, oral antifungal drugs are definitely needed.

Rash in a child
Rash in children is very common and in most cases is associated with harmless causes: viral infections, prickly heat, contact irritation or atopic dermatitis. However, it is the skin that is sometimes the first to signal a dangerous disease, so it is important for parents to know one key trick: a rash that does not turn pale when pressed with a transparent glass requires an immediate call to the ambulance. In all other cases, the doctor understands the cause by the appearance of the elements, their location, the presence of temperature, itching, and what preceded the appearance of the rash.

Heat and sunstroke
Heat stroke is a condition in which the body can no longer cope with heat removal and the body temperature rises dangerously. It’s not just “overheating”: heatstroke affects the brain, kidneys, liver and muscles, so it is considered an emergency. Heat exhaustion usually develops before this, with profuse sweating, weakness and nausea, and at this stage the situation is still easy to correct. Sunstroke is a special case of overheating due to prolonged exposure to direct rays on the head. In hot climates, young children, the elderly and those who work outdoors are especially vulnerable.

Child's head injury
Head contusion is the most common injury in children: babies fall from the sofa and changing table, preschoolers fall from slides and swings. In most cases, the matter is limited to damage to soft tissues: a bump, abrasion or bruise appears, but the brain is not affected. The lump forms quickly because there are many vessels on the cranial vault, and its size does not indicate the severity of the injury. The danger is posed by concussion and more serious injuries, which may not appear immediately, but after several hours. Phenylketonuria
Phenylketonuria is a hereditary metabolic disorder in which the body cannot process the amino acid phenylalanine. It is found in almost all protein foods, and without treatment its levels in the blood increase, and excess damages the developing brain. The child is born outwardly healthy, but without a diet in the first months, persistent mental retardation develops, which can no longer be corrected. That is why newborn screening is carried out all over the world: a drop of blood is taken from the heel in the first days of life. If the diagnosis is made early and the diet is started on time, the child develops normally and is no different from his peers.

Dental fluorosis
Fluorosis is a disorder of enamel formation caused by excess fluoride intake during the period when teeth are still developing inside the jaw, that is, until about the age of eight. The cells that build enamel do not work properly, leaving more protein and less minerals in the enamel. Outwardly, it looks like chalky stripes and spots; in more severe forms, it looks like brown areas and pits on the surface of the tooth. Fluorosis always affects symmetrical teeth because they were formed at the same time. It does not hurt or destroy the tooth like tooth decay, but it does noticeably affect the appearance of your smile.

Snoring in children
Snoring in a child is a sound that occurs when air has difficulty passing through the narrowed airways and causes vibration of the soft tissues of the throat. Occasional snoring with a runny nose during a cold is normal and goes away with it. Constant snoring should be alarming: most often its cause is enlarged adenoids and palatine tonsils. It is not the sound itself that is dangerous, but the pauses in breathing associated with it during sleep. With apnea, the child’s brain regularly lacks oxygen, sleep becomes disrupted, and behavior, attention, and growth suffer. Therefore, a child who snores almost every night needs to be seen by an ENT doctor.

Celiac disease (gluten intolerance)
Celiac disease is a chronic autoimmune disease in which, in genetically predisposed people, the gluten protein found in wheat, rye and barley triggers inflammation of the small intestinal mucosa. The intestinal villi gradually atrophy, and the body ceases to absorb nutrients normally. The disease can manifest itself at any age: in children - diarrhea, bloating and stunting; in adults - often not with intestinal complaints, but with iron deficiency anemia, osteoporosis, chronic fatigue or infertility. The only effective treatment is a strict lifelong gluten-free diet, during which the mucous membrane is restored and the symptoms go away.

Cystitis in children
Cystitis in children is an inflammation of the bladder mucosa, one of the most common urinary tract infections in childhood. Girls are more often affected due to the short urethra and the proximity of the external opening to the anus. Typical signs are frequent painful urination in small portions, pain in the lower abdomen, and sometimes daytime incontinence in a child who has already been potty trained. The key task of the doctor is to distinguish cystitis from pyelonephritis, in which the infection affects the kidney and a high temperature appears. Diagnosis is made by a properly collected urine test and confirmed by culture.
