Acoustic neuroma
Acoustic neuroma, or vestibular schwannoma, is a benign, slow-growing tumor of the vestibular-cochlear nerve sheath. It develops in the internal auditory canal and gradually extends into the area between the cerebellum and the brain stem. The tumor does not metastasize, but as it grows it compresses neighboring structures, so it is important to identify it in time. The most common first sign is a gradual decrease in hearing in one ear in combination with noise or ringing, less often - dizziness and instability. The unilateral nature of the complaints is fundamentally important: it should be the reason for an MRI, since normal age-related hearing loss is usually symmetrical.

Brain tumor
A brain tumor is the growth of abnormal cells in the brain tissue or its membranes. Primary tumors arise in the brain itself, the meninges, the pituitary gland, or the cranial nerves; secondary - metastases of cancer of other organs; in adults they are more common. Tumors can be benign, such as most meningiomas, or malignant, such as glioblastoma. However, even a benign tumor can be dangerous due to the pressure on vital structures in the limited space of the skull. Symptoms depend on the location and rate of growth: increasing headache, epileptic seizures, weakness, speech and vision disorders, personality changes. The main diagnostic method is MRI with contrast, and the type of tumor is determined by histological examination. Treatment is selected by a team of neurosurgeon, oncologist and radiotherapist.

Osteoma of the frontal and ethmoid sinuses
Osteoma is a benign tumor of bone tissue, which is most often found in the paranasal sinuses, primarily in the frontal and ethmoid sinuses. It grows extremely slowly, over the course of years, and in most people it is discovered by chance when an X-ray or CT scan is done for another reason. A small osteoma does not cause any symptoms and does not require treatment. Problems begin when the tumor blocks the exit from the sinus or extends beyond it. Then a persistent headache appears in the forehead, recurring sinusitis, and when it spreads into the orbit, displacement of the eye and double vision. That is why it is not the find itself that is important, but its size, location and dynamics.

Prolactinoma (pituitary adenoma)
Prolactinoma is a benign tumor of the pituitary gland that produces excess of the hormone prolactin. This is the most common hormonally active pituitary adenoma. High prolactin suppresses the production of sex hormones, so in women the menstrual cycle is disrupted or disappears, discharge from the breast appears and difficulties with conception, and in men libido and potency decrease, body hair decreases, and sometimes the mammary glands become enlarged. A large tumor puts additional pressure on the visual pathways and causes headaches and loss of lateral visual fields. The main feature of prolactinoma is that most patients are successfully treated with pills, and only a fraction of them require surgery.

Spina bifida (spina bifida)
Spina bifida is a congenital nonfusion of the posterior parts of the vertebrae, through which the membranes and tissue of the spinal cord can come out. The defect forms very early in pregnancy, when the neural tube closes. Manifestations depend on the form: hidden cleft often does not show itself at all and turns out to be an accidental finding in the image, and open spina bifida is visible immediately after birth and requires surgery in the first days of life. Movement in the legs, sensitivity, and functioning of the bladder and intestines depend on the level and volume of the lesion. Prevention decides a lot here: taking folic acid before conception significantly reduces the risk of neural tube defects.

Syringomyelia
Syringomyelia is a condition in which a fluid-filled cavity forms inside the spinal cord. It gradually expands and compresses the conductive pathways from the inside, primarily those that transmit the sensation of pain and temperature. Therefore, a very characteristic sign is the loss of precisely these types of sensitivity in the arms, shoulders and upper torso while maintaining the sense of touch. A person stops noticing cuts and burns and finds wounds on his hands that he does not remember. The most common cause is a violation of the outflow of cerebrospinal fluid due to Chiari malformation, when part of the cerebellum descends into the foramen magnum. Treatment is aimed at restoring fluid flow.

Spinal stenosis
Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the space in which the spinal cord and nerve roots pass. Most often it develops with age: discs lose height, joints thicken, ligaments thicken and bulge into the canal. Due to compression of the nerve structures, a characteristic picture appears: pain, heaviness and numbness in the legs when walking and standing, which goes away if you sit or lean forward. With cervical localization, the spinal cord is already affected, and clumsiness of the hands and unsteadiness of gait occur. The course is usually slow; many people manage with conservative treatment for years, but when neurological disorders increase, surgery is discussed.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage
Subarachnoid hemorrhage is when blood enters the space between the brain and its arachnoid membrane, where normally there is only cerebrospinal fluid. The most common cause in adults is rupture of an aneurysm in an artery at the base of the brain; less commonly, hemorrhage is associated with trauma, vascular malformation, or a clotting disorder. The blood irritates the membranes and increases intracranial pressure, causing an immediate, unusually severe headache, often with vomiting, photophobia, and neck stiffness. This is an emergency: the speed of delivery to the hospital with a CT scan directly determines the outcome. Any sudden severe headache requires calling an ambulance by calling 103.

Brain contusion
A brain contusion is a traumatic brain injury in which the very substance of the brain is damaged: crush areas, minor hemorrhages and swelling occur. Unlike a concussion, changes are visible on a CT scan and the effects may last longer. The causes are usually serious: a fall from a height, a hit on a hard surface, a road injury, a sports collision, and in the elderly, a fall at home. Severity is determined by the duration of loss of consciousness, the patient's condition and CT data. Even a mild bruise requires medical supervision, because an intracranial hematoma can appear hours after the injury, when the person is already feeling better.

Hydrocephalus
Hydrocephalus is an excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricles of the brain, leading to their expansion and compression of brain tissue. The disease is usually associated with babies and enlarged heads, but there is a second, much more often overlooked form - normal pressure hydrocephalus in the elderly. Its manifestations - gait disturbance, urinary incontinence and memory loss - are almost always attributed to age and dementia, whereas this is one of the few reversible causes: after surgery, the condition can improve significantly.
