What does it look like
Stuttering manifests itself in different ways, and parents do not always immediately understand that they see it and not the usual childish haste.
- Repetitions of sounds and syllables at the beginning of a word: “m-m-m-mama”, “ba-ba-grandmother”
- Sound stretching: "mmmachine"
- Blocks - the child opens his mouth, but no sound comes out, speech seems to be stuck
- Associated movements: facial tension, squinting, nodding, stamping, clenching fists
- Filler words that a child uses to speed up his speech: “well”, “here”, “this is it”
- Replacing difficult words with easier ones, breaking off a phrase in the middle
- Unevenness: today there are almost no stutters, tomorrow they are very pronounced
Why does it occur
Stuttering is not a result of upbringing or a manifestation of character weakness. It is based on a combination of the innate characteristics of the speech centers and the load on rapidly developing speech.
- Hereditary predisposition - a significant proportion of children have relatives who stutter
- Male gender - in boys, stuttering is more common and less likely to go away on its own
- The period of rapid growth of the vocabulary in 2–5 years, when speech capabilities lag behind the plan
- High speed of speech in the family, interruptions, lots of questions
- Associated speech disorders
- High demands on the child’s speech, the “tell a rhyme to the guests” situation
- Major changes: moving, birth of a sibling, starting kindergarten
For some it goes away on its own and for some it doesn’t.
Independent restoration of fluent speech occurs in most children, but there are signs in which the likelihood of this is lower and should not be expected.
- Stuttering lasts longer than 6–12 months
- Started after 3.5–4 years - the later the onset, the lower the likelihood of self-resolution
- There are relatives in the family whose stuttering persists into adulthood
- Male child
- There are blocks and tension, not just easy repetitions.
- Associated movements appeared - squinting, nodding, grimacing
- The child realizes the difficulty, gets upset, and begins to avoid talking
- There are other speech disorders
What should parents do?
What not to do
- Saying “take your time”, “breathe and repeat”, “say calmly” - these phrases draw attention to the speech and increase tension
- Request to repeat the word correctly
- Negotiate for the child and suggest words
- Mimicking or faking hesitation, even as a joke
- Scold, punish, shame for “starting to stutter again”
- Discuss a problem in front of a child in the third person
- Force you to speak in front of guests and recite poems “to the public”
- Drastically change the environment and overload the child with mugs in the hope of distracting
- Take people who promise to “relieve fear”
The general principle is simple: the less attention is focused on the speaking process itself and the calmer the pace of communication in the family, the easier it is for the child. Stuttering intensifies where speech becomes the subject of assessment.
When to go to a specialist and how to help
