Knowing your type of aging can help you live a healthier life.
Scientists from Stanford University School of Medicine have concluded that there are individual “patterns of aging.” We are talking about combinations of molecular and other changes that predominate during aging in different people. These changes can be detected at a young age, helping to determine the most important goals for prolonging a healthy life. The study results were published in Nature Medicine.
Scientists determined the types of aging based on the increase in which biomarkers of this process is most pronounced in humans. A certain type does not mean that aging along other biological pathways does not occur in parallel. They are not mutually exclusive; a combination of them is possible.
Scientists examined the levels of proteins, metabolites and lipids in 106 healthy people aged 29 to 75 years over a period of 2-3 years. They regularly took tests of blood, saliva, urine, stool, nasal and intestinal microbiome, and also performed genetic tests.
The authors identified four biological directions of aging: metabolic, immune, hepatic and renal. With the metabolic type, as you age, the risk of diabetes first increases, and markers of this disease appear. People with the immune type have increased levels of inflammatory markers or a higher susceptibility to diseases that are associated with the immune system.
“An aging pattern is more than just a label; it can help people focus on specific health risk factors and find areas in which they are most likely to face problems in the future,” said Michael Snyder, who led the study.
During the study, 15 participants showed a decrease in the overall rate of aging. In some cases, levels of markers of aging decreased after lifestyle changes or taking certain medications. For example, people who lost weight had lower markers of diabetes and improved kidney function when taking statins.
