Scientists have discovered what food causes prostate cancer
Experts from the Medical Research Center at McGill University have found a direct link between nutrition and the development of prostate cancer, writes MedicalXpress.
Scientists have found that consuming saturated fat causes cell reprogramming, which contributes to the progression of cancer. At the same time, reducing their share in the diet slows down the development of prostate cancer in the initial stages.
The study authors concluded that saturated fat consumption mimics overexpression of the MYC oncogene and thus accelerates the development of prostate cancer.
Scientists looked at the diets of 319 patients and their MYC gene expression and found that those who reported high intakes of saturated fat were four times more likely to die from prostate cancer than those who ate lower-fat foods.
“In patients with prostate cancer, the prostate gland contains both tumor cells and healthy cells. We have proven that consumption of saturated fat affects transcription factors only in tumor tissue,” explained one of the study authors.
According to scientists, the results of the study can be used in the development of special diets for cancer patients.
Saturated fats are found in red meat, dairy products, palm oil and coconut oil.
