Therapeutic and prophylactic water procedures
It is believed that water, unlike drugs, cannot cause harm and does not give side effects, and yet hydrotherapy, like any other treatment, should be started gradually and with caution. It is necessary to take into account age, general condition of the body, and susceptibility to various diseases.
A weak, unseasoned and often ill person is unlikely to instantly turn into Hercules if he dives into an ice hole without any preparation. It is very important to listen to your body, and no matter how useful the procedure is, if it causes the most unpleasant sensations, it is better to refuse it and choose something else. Even if you really want to become healthy and hardened as quickly as possible, you should not run in the snow with a runny nose, douse yourself with cold water, or suffer from a sore throat. For people who have just started on the path of hydrotherapy, as well as for the weakened, elderly, and sick, it is better to start using water at a temperature of at least 14-15° C.
Cold water procedures should be used on a warm (but not hot) body. Abrupt short-term exposure to ice water stimulates adaptation mechanisms, and if the body is not warmed up, it will take time for thermoregulatory mechanisms to turn on, which may result in cooling of the body. The biopathogenic energy of cold will penetrate inside, and the person, instead of hardening and improving his health, will get sick. If the body is overheated or hot, sudden exposure to cold can lead to vasospasm and blockage of blood flow.
It is not recommended to use water treatments with cold water immediately before bed, as they have a stimulating effect, which means it will be difficult to fall asleep.
You cannot start a hydrotherapy session if you are hypothermic; in this case you need to do it first. keep warm. If you are very tired, you need to rest a little and only then take the procedure.
During procedures with cold water, you should not undress for a long time and then get dressed. For example, along with undressing and dressing, the cold bath procedure should not last more than 5 minutes.
Modern medicine recommends rubbing yourself with a towel after a cold bath, thus giving a body massage. However, Kneipp advises not to dry yourself, but only to quickly get dressed, explaining that when drying, some parts of the body will dry out while others will remain wet, as a result, different parts of the skin will have different body temperatures, and this is harmful for people who are sick or weakened. If you get dressed without drying yourself, natural warmth will spread evenly and quickly throughout the body.
In order for all parts of the body to dry quickly and reach a normal temperature, physical activity is necessary immediately after a cold bath. Fast walking is useful, and after a feeling of warmth appears, it can be replaced by slow walking. The duration of physical activity after a cold bath is at least 25-30 minutes.
