Urinary incontinence reduces sexual activity
Urinary incontinence in old age reduces sexual activity and negatively affects the psyche. This conclusion was reached by a research team led by Dr. David Lee from Manchester Metropolitan University. The results of the scientists' observations appeared today on the official website of the educational institution.
Urinary incontinence is a fairly common problem among the fair sex, which affects women of different ages and social classes and is much less common in men. Stress or tension (for example, coughing or sneezing) can lead to involuntary urine leakage: according to statistics, in Western countries and in Russia almost 40% of women suffer from this disease. Incontinence itself does not have any detrimental health consequences, but it does have a negative impact on the psyche, as it leads to hygiene problems and social awkwardness.
In this regard, British scientists tried to understand how incontinence affects sex life. The experts used questionnaires from the English Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSA). Scientists selected 3,805 questionnaires from women and men aged 50 to 90 years and older, all of whom lived in England and answered questions about aging, health and sexuality in the questionnaires. About 20% of women and 7% of men reported incidents of urinary incontinence in the past 12 months. The results of the analysis of the questionnaires showed that incontinence in most cases was associated with a decrease in sexual activity and increased anxiety because of this. In addition, many subjects noted the appearance of negative symptoms such as vaginal dryness, erectile dysfunction in men and difficulty achieving orgasm. In addition, incontinence has been associated with the development of depression.
Sexual activity has been shown in several previous studies to have a positive impact on overall well-being in older adults and has beneficial effects on the body on a variety of levels. However, intimate relationships, like incontinence, are a taboo topic for many, which leads to a decrease in quality of life. Therefore, according to Dr. Lee, healthcare providers should be aware of the impact of incontinence on social comfort and should pay more attention to addressing this problem in their patients.
