Computer vision syndrome.
Ophthalmologist of the 1st category of the VITAMED MEDICAL clinic Abdulkhakimova Rano Alisherovna will introduce you to an article on the topic “Computer vision syndrome.”
Disputes about the impact of computers on human health have not subsided for half a century. As an ophthalmologist, I would like to discuss the topic of computer vision syndrome with you in this article.
Nowadays, the computer has become an integral part of every person's life. Spending a lot of time sitting at the computer, in one position, without taking our eyes off the screen, we experience a complex of visual and ocular symptoms associated with the work of the eyes at close range. At the initial stage, the syndrome may manifest itself as increased eye fatigue, a feeling of heavy eyelids, and frequent blinking. If measures are not taken in time, the condition may worsen. Then photosensitivity develops and lacrimation appears. There are also accompanying complaints of discomfort and pain in the head, neck, back, shoulders, as well as discomfort when moving the eyes.
Combining all the similar complaints and symptoms among people who spend a lot of time in front of a computer, in 1998 American doctors coined a new term - Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).
Asthenopia (visual fatigue) is a functional disorder accompanied by unpleasant sensations in the eyes (stinging, burning, feeling of sand, redness, blurred vision, etc.) that occur after intense visual work.
People aged 12 to 40 years are most susceptible to computer vision syndrome. The main complaints are:
- burning sensation in the eyes,
- feeling of sand in the eyes,
- pain in the eye sockets and forehead,
- pain when moving the eyes,
- redness of the eyes,
- double vision (diplopia),
- slower refocusing from near to distant objects and back (impaired accommodation),
- blurred vision,
- fatigue when reading,
- headache,
- irritability,
- The McCullagh visual effect occurs. If you move your gaze from the screen to a black or white object, it “paints” the color that dominated the screen.
Tips for preventing computer vision syndrome
- Use special computer glasses for work.
- Limit your computer time to no more than 4 hours a day.
- Take mandatory breaks every 20-30 minutes while working at close range. After every hour of hard work, give your eyes 10-15 minutes of rest. The best thing is to look outside the window: admire the landscape, moving your gaze from close to distant objects, or just at the sky.
- Proper organization of the workplace and a rational work schedule are of great importance. Adjust the position and illumination of the monitor, as well as the illumination of the workplace and room. Avoid sudden changes in light - for example, working in a dark room with a brightly lit monitor.
- Compliance with the rules is especially important for children and adolescents. Children are recommended to spend time on a personal computer only for educational purposes.
- Use special glasses with progressive lenses in which the clear zone
vision corresponds to the movement of the gaze when working at different distances. The use of such glasses for intensive PC users reduces visual fatigue. If the user has ametropia, the decision on the need to wear corrective glasses is made by an ophthalmologist after an examination.
- Work in a comfortable position. For good vision and prevention of asthenopia it is important
good blood supply. Therefore, when looking up from the monitor, do physical exercises or massage the collar area.
- Use special drops that replace tears for the eyes. To select therapy
Be sure to consult an ophthalmologist.
- Following these recommendations will reduce irritability.
and headaches, the emotional state and performance improves.
