BIOPSY OF THYROID NODES

BIOPSY OF THYROID NODES

“Biopsy” is a medical procedure through which a specialist doctor obtains cells from a specific organ. When performing a thyroid biopsy, thin needles are used, so the second and more complete name for this procedure is “fine needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid gland.” During a biopsy, a specialist uses a syringe to obtain cells from the node, and then sends the resulting material for examination to a cytologist.

Who is indicated for thyroid nodule biopsy?

The indication for a thyroid biopsy is the presence of a nodule(s) measuring 10 millimeters or more. In some situations, it is also possible to perform a biopsy of a smaller node, but if there are appropriate indications: the presence of thyroid cancer in close relatives, signs corresponding to ultrasound - uneven contours, microcalcifications (calcium areas in the node).

Is a thyroid biopsy dangerous?

The likelihood of complications is minimized when a biopsy of thyroid nodules is performed by a trained specialist and in a specialized center. The gold standard for performing thyroid nodule biopsies is the use of an ultrasound system. A possible unpleasant consequence of a biopsy may be the formation of a bruise (hematoma) in the puncture area. It is important to understand that when performing a biopsy, it is impossible to “bypass” all the small vessels and capillaries of the skin, subcutaneous tissue and muscles covering the thyroid gland. When performing a biopsy, the specialist, under ultrasound control, avoids getting the needle into large vessels (carotid artery, jugular vein), trachea and esophagus.

Rarely, some patients develop a fever in the late afternoon after the biopsy. As a rule, the temperature rises no more than 37 degrees and this does not require special treatment; if the temperature rises to 38 degrees, you can take antipyretic drugs. If the thyroid nodule is located close to the trachea, when it is biopsied, the patient may cough. After a thyroid biopsy, the cough goes away.

Preparing for a thyroid biopsy

No special preparation is required for a thyroid biopsy. There is no need to fast or eat before the procedure. Very often, patients ask about behavior after a thyroid biopsy. As with taking blood from a vein, you just need to wait 5-10 minutes, after which you can do all your planned activities for the day (there are no restrictions on diet or physical activity).

How is a thyroid biopsy performed?

At the VITAMED MEDICAL clinic, fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid gland is performed under the control of a Siemens Acuson X300 ultrasound scanner, the resolution of which allows you to determine the most optimal place for taking a biopsy and avoid damage to blood vessels and organs.

The biopsy needle has a very small diameter, which reduces pain to a minimum.

Examination of the obtained material in a cytology laboratory takes from 3 to 10 days.

How long does a thyroid biopsy take?

The total duration of the biopsy with treatment of the neck, description of the ultrasound picture, filling out the biopsy protocol, as a rule, takes no more than 10-15 minutes. The injection itself and aspiration from the node takes a few seconds. During the biopsy, the patient is asked not to swallow or talk, and there is no need to hold his breath.
